IPX8 rated Bluetooth earbuds for swimming?
Friend is looking for some decent sounding IPX8 rated Bluetooth earbuds for swimming. I only saw one model on Amazon and it looked... chunky. Anybody here done the research already and willing to make a recommendation?- NecroNeo

Looking for a cheap portabke dac/amp to pair with smartphones.
I believe that, unless I'm missing something critical, your impression about the E1 not working as a DAC with Android is incorrect. I'll grant the possibility that the Nexus/E1 might not work right, but since a while ago, like 4.2, Android has supported being a USB host and treating a...- NecroNeo

How to get rid of static noise when using earphones?
Sounds like you've isolated it to one kind of device. Check with laptop/tablet/other amps to confim if it really is audio out from the Moto X.- NecroNeo

That's exactly what I meant. I've done a bit of ABXing on my own and almost all songs were transparent to me, even compressed at LAME V2. However, Khazad-Dûm from the 3rd disc of the LotR Complete Recordings was not transparent at any level of LAME compression. Something about the treble in the...- NecroNeo

Yeah, I didn't think about really bad source files. When I mentioned poorly made recordings, I was thinking about somebody doing it wrong in the studio, which is why I rated it unlikely. But poorly done lossy compression is rampant and probably the most likely culprit. I know there's plenty of...- NecroNeo

Sounds to me like you are hearing noise in your source or source components. You could have the volume up too loud, or have an amp which doesn't have a very low sound floor, or all your recordings could be poorly made, in decreasing order of likelihood. Just my guesses, anyway.- NecroNeo

Thinking about getting an Archos 48 (HDD version)
I know I'm resurrecting this, but I'm also interested in the same player. I was considering buying a 256 SSD and an old gen 5 iPod and rockboxing it, but if this has similar sound quality to an iPod it may be the way to go. Anybody here have experience with these or know how they sound?- NecroNeo

(REVIEW): Etymotic HF5
I'm not trying to jack the thread, so if anybody knows of a better place for this, let me know and I'll move it! Alright, so: I got some HF3s about a year ago (got a pretty good deal - yes!). I had some issues getting proper fit as they're the first IEMs I've used that go past that bend in...- NecroNeo

A Sensational, Fantastic, And Simply Amazing New Binaural Album By Chesky!
And that's exactly what it is worth, SeeHear. Products are worth what the market will bear. And, as has been mentioned, the market for this album is niche and wealthy by world-standards, therefore the album is worth the price they are charging. If you aren't willing to pay that much, that just...- NecroNeo

Etymotic hf3 and Toshiba Gigabeat problems....
OH, I read up a little and realized that it was the contact locations on the jack that was the problem, but I didn't realize the one you linked swapped contact locations. Thanks again for all your help!- NecroNeo

Etymotic hf3 and Toshiba Gigabeat problems....
Thanks! I'll look for a 4-pole to three pole adapter then. It looks like the one you linked was a 4-pole male end, so that one might not be quite right. I would have guessed that an adapter was available, but I was worried it was the phones.- NecroNeo

Etymotic hf3 and Toshiba Gigabeat problems....
So I picked up some Etymotic hf3s on clearance at Best Buy because I had a gift card there and my in-ears were not very good. I didn't really need the mic/apple functionality, but for half the price of hf5's how could I say no? I immediately tried them on my Gigabeat (rockboxed) and...- NecroNeo

What does everyone want for christmas?
I'd like some 1964 Qs but I think I'll get some Ety HF5s and then use the voucher for the custom mold somewhere down the road. Also, a Rockboxed 160GB Classic so I can take my whole library with me. I'll skip the portable amp for now and build one later on.- NecroNeo

Why do people like bass so much?
http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=standards&p_id=9735 I've had to do some work with OSHA sound exposure limits before and remembered seeing this graph. The lines delineate volume at which hearing protection must be provided. So it appears 1-8 kHz is most...- NecroNeo

Parametric equalizer and quality
I have read the tutorial/wiki on equalizing with pink noise, and I have to say it was very helpful and a great introduction to the concept of head-related transfer function. I've tried, with moderate success, to use this approach in my rig, but I find that because I'm using a subjective measure...- NecroNeo

Does the fall of music ever depress you? It does me.
Since I have no experiential frame of reference to compare the 60s to the 2000s, being only 22 y.o., I decided to look into the no. 1 singles of each decade. As far as the generation gap vs. popular music actually getting worse, I'll only say 1) that we tend to look at the past with rose-colored... -
