Fostex to release revolutionary DAC/amp combo!
This thing barely qualifies as a portable. It's huge, and it has a 5 hour charge time and 7 hour run time. Ouch!- Kubernetes

Sony Walkman vs. iPhone 3GS vs. Samsung Galaxy S as mp3/flac audio sources
Should be fine. I'm running ES10s now and they're magnificent. The dev claimed he tried his 300ohm can and got decent volume ( probably crappy dynamics though).. Quote:- Kubernetes

Just got my ES10s :-)
So I just got my ES10s today, a complement to my ESW9s, but more for rock. Wow, that was no joke about the deep and punchy bass. It just kicks my ears coming out of my tube amp. Mids are definitely more recessed compared to my woodies, but it's still very liquid smooth. Highs are...- Kubernetes

Grado RS1i vs Sennheiser HD 650
Yeah this is a really terrible way of proceeding. What kind of music do you listen to? What headphones do you have and what have you liked about them? Honestly, I can't really recommend you go either route here. Maybe some cheaper phones that let you figure out the kind of sound you're...- Kubernetes

Sony Walkman vs. iPhone 3GS vs. Samsung Galaxy S as mp3/flac audio sources
You'd be wrong. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=806195 http://www.wolfsonmicro.com/products/audio_hubs/WM8994/ Galaxy S packs a Wolfson 8994, 24-bit DAC, hardware parametric EQ, 100db SNR. It is very clean sounding, one of the best I've heard from a portable...- Kubernetes

Sony Walkman vs. iPhone 3GS vs. Samsung Galaxy S as mp3/flac audio sources
Galaxy S has native FLAC support and blows away iPhone 4 in SQ.- Kubernetes

Android memory capacity. Figures?
Download the Galaxy S Tuner app as well. You may not need it, but it gives you access to parametric EQ (fun to play with at the very least).- Kubernetes

Any impressions yet on the Droid Incredible for music
Get a Fascinate if you're on Verizon. I keep saying this: the SGS line has exceptional audio hardware for a phone or even a dedicated MP3 player. It beats the snot out of an iPhone or iPod.- Kubernetes

Android memory capacity. Figures?
Also, the SGS line has a fantastic DAC and very clean headphone amp. If you're willing to flash some custom software, you can really get some fantastic sound out of it.- Kubernetes

What happened to Grado's reputation?
Yeah, the whole pad thing was just ridiculous. $700 for headphones with scratchy uncomfortable pads that didn't sound right? I went through the whole saga of flat pads, then flat pads with holes cut out, the sock pads that made you look like Princess Leia--all because Grado couldn't include...- Kubernetes

Leaving portable hifi - it's too silly
Hey, portable cans are good in the right situations! I take my ESW9s on my commute, but if I'm going out I'll use IEMs on the ride there.- Kubernetes

What headphones are 'best'? Are dr dre better than sennheiser?
Quote: I wouldn't say "barely." They don't isolate like IEMs or a full closed circumaural phone, but they do alright. I can wear them on a train no problem--would probably not want them on an airplane. Quote: Definitely not open. That's why I suggested...- Kubernetes

What headphones are 'best'? Are dr dre better than sennheiser?
I currently have a pair of sennheiser HD205 headphones that i think are great, but, they are uncomfortable for long journeys, leak quite a lot of sound, and dont keep them much sound out so you hear a lot of background noise. Based on this, have you considered IEMs? Really quality...- Kubernetes

Yeah but portable cans with high impedance is a major design fail, IMO. They should sound good out of a portable player. Quote:- Kubernetes

What headphones are 'best'? Are dr dre better than sennheiser?
Quote: How would you have gotten the wrong ones if you enjoy them? Don't be put off because people here find Beats and Bose to be bad values--if they work for you, that's all that matters. Of course the issue is to find what works for you. Are you dissatisfied with your Senns...- Kubernetes

Big Grado sound signature variation of the same models
I'm curious how two headphones from the same range and time could sound so different. Grado has to match drivers, right? Otherwise you'd hear pronounced differences from left and right drivers. Wouldn't they notice at that stage "Whoa, these have no bass at all."- Kubernetes

What happened to Grado's reputation?
Quote: This. Nearly everyone here has a torrid but short affair with Grado. I still like the sound, but it;s a terrible value proposition. All of their headphones are overpriced and the comfort and build quality are inferior to boot. What Grado does have going for it is a very...- Kubernetes

What happened to Grado's reputation?
I'm probably one of the oldest members here (by join date), and I don't think it's gotten worse, per se, but just larger, more diverse, more unwieldy. There are still tons of good reviews and discussions, but the signal to noise ratio has become something you have to contend with. It's pretty...- Kubernetes

Help. I need to buy my first pair of IEM's for Church stage use!
A crossover is essentially a circuit or passive componentry that filters out certain frequencies. When you see speakers with several different sized drivers, there's a crossover that sends the low frequency signals to the bass drivers and the highs to the tweeters. That way no driver is trying...- Kubernetes

Leaving portable hifi - it's too silly
Screw that. Those big reviews are considerably more helpful than simple single-product reviews or even A-B reviews. A description like "it's forward in the mids" is significantly more helpful if put in context against other cans, because at least there's a chance you'll have a point of...- Kubernetes

Quote: Kinda the same, kinda different. There were certainly plenty of lurkers and plenty of the "X is the best, period" people. And yeah there was a lot more hands on, but it's not like it was significantly more open-minded. This was a Senn, Grado, and Ety fansite for quite a while...- Kubernetes

Best Sound Quality from Cell Phone
If you are up for tinkering with your Vibrant it can sound better than any iPod. It has a Wolfson 8994 DAC, but you need to flash a kernel that unlocks some of the hardware capabilities of the SoC, including hardware anti-jitter and 128x oversampling. The headphone out is extremely clean, but...- Kubernetes

Leaving portable hifi - it's too silly
Quote: True, but back when I joined exploration was required because there wasn't a huge base of experience. Maybe two people had heard a pair of R10s and a handful had Stax rigs. Nowadays it's easy to just ask "How does x sound compared to y for jazz?" and a dozen people can relate...- Kubernetes
