HDMI connection worsens ground loop
I meant the audio interface to your stereo, I was assuming that your computer is also connected to your stereo, but maybe I'm wrong.- charlesE

HDMI connection worsens ground loop
What about adding isolation to the audio interface instead of the HDMI?- charlesE

Does the Perfect Portable Headphone Exist?
+1 on the Sony MDR-V6's. They sound great and are extremely durable. You can find them on ebay for around 70 bucks.- charlesE

USB hum/noise
It sounds like a ground-loop problem. The EMU 0404 has it's own power-supply so it's probably not a power-noise issue. You could try getting an audio isolation transformer, like this one: The Source By Circuit City : Cables - RCA Audio - GROUND LOOP ISOLATOR ADAPTER But it will distort the...- charlesE

Help me cure annoying sound "hiccups"
I've had some success eliminating clicking and popping by connecting my USB DAC through a 2-port hub like this one: The Source By Circuit City : USB Hubs - NEXXTECH USB 2.0 2-PORT USB HUB Assuming you're using a USB 1.1 DAC Connected to a USB 2.0 port the hub's Transaction Translator (TT)...- charlesE

What does "jitter" sound like?
Ah, yes, from the Dunn article I got the impression that Figure 9 was based on testing, but it's essentially a plot of Equation 1. I should have read it more closely. Thanks!- charlesE

Audiophile Linux software
I haven't tried it so I'm not sure if it works, but if you're using Ubuntu you could try this: HOWTO Compile MPD With AAC/M4A Support on Ubuntu - James Andres's Tips & How-To's- charlesE

What does "jitter" sound like?
Maybe the experiment in the Banjamin and Gannon paper you mentioned had jitter injected into a DAC pre-PLL, i.e. on the line and not the sampling clock?- charlesE

What does "jitter" sound like?
Interesting stuff, one thing doesn't seem to add up though (or maybe I'm just missing something). Figure 9 of this AES article: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=re...A_DAC-swN1Id-g Seems to indicate that Deterministic Jitter (sinusoidal) above 3kHz is audible at amplitudes of less than 100ps...- charlesE

What does "jitter" sound like?
You're absolutely right, if you can't hear the difference then it doesn't make a difference. I wasn't able to find the AES Study you (bigshot) mentioned, do you have a link for it? I did find this one which comes to a similar conclusion: http://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/ast/26/1/50/_pdf...- charlesE

What does "jitter" sound like?
Interesting topic heading, I thought I'd throw in my 2cents. Random jitter on the clock driving a DAC (or ADC) will raise noise floor by: (1) SNR = 20*log10(1/(2*pi*freq_signal*tjitter_rms)) The derivation for this equation is here: Analog Devices: Analog to Digital Converters: Tutorial...- charlesE

Audiophile Linux software
I especially like the way it will run even without the GUI loaded. I'm not sure why more players don't use this model. I guess it takes some effort to setup, but that could be all automated. Sonata has the ability to do searches through your entire library based on Artists, Album, etc... I...- charlesE

Audiophile Linux software
I use Ubuntu, it may be different on different distros but after I installed mpd I edited /etc/mpd.conf with: sudo nano /etc/mpd.conf to select an alternate output. There are a lot of helpful notes in the config file, but if you're using your default audio output you shouldn't have to change...- charlesE

Sound level
I've had the same problem, my problem was because the files were encoded at different base volume levels. I don't have an iPod, but the player I do have (Creative Zen) has an automatic gain control (called automatic volume adjust or something like that). When I activated it it seemed to fix that...- charlesE

Best Source for music?
Other -> Zunior.com No DRM, $8.88 per CD for 192kbit MP3 and $10.88 for FLAC, but they only offer music from Independent Canadian Artists so if you're not living in Canada there's a good chance you haven't heard many of them.- charlesE

Audiophile Linux software
Thanks guys, I was cycling through all of the various Linux Players and had settled on Audacious but wasn't that happy with it (it's a real memory hog). After reading this thread I gave mpd with gimmix a look and haven't looked back.- charlesE
