Best MPD Setup
Quote: The fanless server with Juli@ could be built with an Alix 1d board. Would you be using its audio out or S/PDIF? You could also invest in a better DAC with an asynchronous USB input. Some options are a used Wavelength DAC (look on Audiogon). Another option is to buy a pre-built...- nyc_paramedic

Quote: In regards to the rt-kernel, you absolutely correct. I was hoping that there might be a wiki page to help set this up in the near future. Right now, I'm in the middle of some personal things, so much that I haven't been able to take Voyage MPD out for a spin.- nyc_paramedic

Best MPD Setup
Quote: Yes, all is well now with playing WAV, AIFF, and AIF files with mpd 0.16~alpha2. This happened after upgrading to the latest ALSA snapshot compiled for the Voyage kernel. On rt kernels: I haven't used one, yet. I really don't know if it will make that much of a difference...- nyc_paramedic

Best MPD Setup
I'm pretty sure that 0.16alpha2 does play my .WAV and AIF and AIFF files. I'm at work now burtcan double check when I get home later. I don't convert from .WAV or AIFF to FLAC on the fly. That would mean a on the fly conversion, then decoding to FLAC. Is that what you were asking?- nyc_paramedic

Best MPD Setup
Quote: I don't up-sample anything; all my files are played at their native formats, including 192Khz files. The Alix, with its 500Mhz Geode CPU, is not a great candidate for up/down-sampling. But the overall majority of people that I have spoken to and have contacted me have zero...- nyc_paramedic

Best MPD Setup
Quote: For starters... You get both mpd 0.16alpha2 and a recent snapshot of ALSA (UAC2 hardware support) pre-compiled as a .deb for Voyage kernel 2.6.32. This is important as one does not need to compile these sources by hand, and this can be very daunting for someone who is newer...- nyc_paramedic

Best MPD Setup
Quote: I have been in talks with the lead developer of Voyage Linux, and in the *very* near future there should be a release of a flavor of Voyage Linux specifically tailored for computer audiophiles. Confirmed for the initial release will be mpd 0.16 alpha2 and an October snapshot of...- nyc_paramedic

Best MPD Setup
Quote: I don't use ecasound, and the few internet radio stations I listen to are already supported by standard mpd and its libraries. I use 0.16 alpha2 because of its S24_3LE 24 bit packed samples support, which is needed for true 24 bit DACs when using hw:0,0 and bypassing ALSA. I also...- nyc_paramedic

Quote: I am using 0.16 Alpha 2 on my Alix. You can get a pre-compiled .deb for Voyage Linux here: http://www.voyage.hk/dists/experimental/mpd/ Should work on a standard testing/Sid Debian install as well.- nyc_paramedic

Adcom GDA-700: Old vs New
It was a very well regarded DAC in its day and no slouch now, even by today's standards. I had this DAC for well over ten years, most recently with a Trends UD-10 USB to S/PDIF converter. The DAC is dynamic, smooth, has a wide *and* deep sound stage. Look at the DAC chips used and the specs...- nyc_paramedic
