the size thing: historically, hdd manufacturers fudge the size of the drives. they go by '1GB = 1000 MB = 1 000, 000 KB' and so on. however computers are binary by nature, so 1GB = 1024 MB. so take a 20GB iPod. they claim it is 20GB but really they mean 20,000,000,000 bytes...

I think the general conensus on quality nowadays is to rip at alt-preset extreme or standard, as opposed to a constant 192.

yes! that was one scary hour. but anyway, there have been all kinds of problems w/ the new firmware and updating on windows. a lot of people had the hanging at 90% thing. then they would uplug their 'hanged|?' ipod but it would then be stuck at the apple logo and a reset would just bring it...

speaking of file systems; how long does it typically take to convert an ipod from mac to fat? mine has been like that for a half hour or so already :/

that depends on how you are using lame. if you are running it from the command line, it would be lame --alt-preset standard/extreme/whatever <source> <dest> but if you are using eac, there is a spot for command line arguements, at which point you would stick in --alt-preset...
