Reply to review by 'deskmate' on item 'iFi Audio micro iDSD'
Thank you for a very nice review. I too have the iDSD BL and the Mojo, my findings are a bit different from yours. To me, the iDSD BL is significantly better than the mojo in most areas. It has better definition, better resolution, better control, more solid and full body, and more...- deskmate

Competition Closed...but what is in the Retro – Stereo 50?
Agree 100%, but the other problem is that our brain is linear ... so in order to reach more people, especially the younger ones, may be put both up next time, so instead of "15dB", put "15dB (~31 times)" ... a win win- deskmate

Competition Closed...but what is in the Retro – Stereo 50?
Agree with you that dB has been used for century in engineering. I guess one need to learn some special items when pursuing a hobby. If people like cars, they will need to know about house power (or kW) etc. but those are a lot easier to master, as they are linear. so a 300 hp car is twice as...- deskmate

Thank you for the explanation, save me a trip to Google a dB calculator. Why can't people wrote something layman can understand? Stop being dB this, dB that ... Do we really need an engineering degree to enjoy audio? Some others (e.g. LH Labs) are better at explaining stuff to the general...- deskmate

Well said, exactly! But sadly I don't think they can stop the new campaigns. With their business model, they need the money from the new campaigns in order to continue funding the old campaigns. Because with all the lengthy delays, the original budgets set aside for the old campaigns...- deskmate

iFi iDSD Micro DSD512 / PCM768 DAC and Headphone Amp. Impressions, Reviews and Comments.
If I understand correctly, XBass and 3D in iDSD is not DSP, it's ASP. Please correct me if I am wrong. BTW, which filter did you use for listening, from the forum posts, seems that the "Bit-Perfect" is the one gives the most organic sound.- deskmate

If you say so, so be it I nearly forgot to mention. I was involved in silicon chip level design for many years, it was my day job. So when I say something regarding silicon design, I think I can hold my own and do have more than a clue, but I will spare you anyway.- deskmate

Sorry that if I didn’t explain it clearly before. FPGA are very flexible as one can design anything from it. FPGA is just like LEGO blocks, if one wants a toy 747, one can build a 747 from the small standard LEGO building blocks: Then if one wishes, then he can also built a F16 out...- deskmate

Yes, Hugo uses a Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA: http://www.xilinx.com/products/silicon-devices/fpga/spartan-6/ "Spartan®-6 FPGA delivers an optimal balance of low risk, low cost, and low power for cost-sensitive applications, now with 42% less power consumption and 12% increased performance...- deskmate

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field-programmable_gate_array "FPGAs contain programmable logic components called "logic blocks", and a hierarchy of reconfigurable interconnects that allow the blocks to be "wired together" – somewhat like many (changeable) logic gates that can be inter-wired...- deskmate

This is true. But there is always the other side of the coin, the FPGA's silicon is not often optimised for "audio" use but instead it is optimised for generic use. So although FPGA can be ultra fast, but sometime it may compromise the switching noise and jitter performance in the audio...- deskmate
