    AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

I agree with appsmarsterx, had a listen on my system with the K601 and the bass sounded fine. I think it might be due to the balance of the track, making you think you need to turn it down too much to avoid the high end, but if you do you'll lose the punch of the bass. The Barrington Levy track...

    AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

My K701 pads were well worn when I made my most recent impressions, but then again the K702 pads might be different. I don't believe I've compared the two since I washed the K701 pads, however, and I don't think I washed my K601 pads anyway which I'm planning to do soon, so I'll give them a try...

    AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

I think it's the denser, stiffer foam and angle of the K701 pads that affect the sound that way for us, creating a greater seal than the K601 pads. So perhaps some K701/2 pads are less dense as you say, which may explain why others have come to different conclusions...

    AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

I bought my K701 pads separately (rather than owning the K701 itself), but they're most certainly not flat, being stiffer and angled when compared with the K601 pads. Interestingly they also sound more "Senn like" to me.

    AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

Whilst there's nothing wrong with either preference when it comes to stock pads or K701/2 pads, I am relieved to some degree to see others who share my opinions of the K701/2 pads; I was starting to wonder if I was going crazy considering all the praise for the K701/2 pads.

    AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

I hand washed them in a bowl of warm water with a bit of detergent, as suggested previously be someone here, then left them to air-dry. They don't appear to have lost shape or structure doing that, so you should be safe. I wouldn't want to machine wash or dry them for fear of shrinkage.

    AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

To further my impressions of the K701 pads from page 64, with additional listening I've got more of an idea on how I believe the K701 pads affect the treble on the K601. What I'm hearing is a loss of impact from the treble, with high pitched sounds losing some snap, and cymbals losing some of...

    AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

Do you mean the actual cups, or the pads? I don't know about the others you mentioned, and I cannot guarantee that the K612 pads are exactly the same as the K601 pads (it's likely that they are), but the depth of a K601 pad is about 2.5cm. The total diameter is about 11.2cm, but the pads are...

    AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

I was thinking of washing my K701 pads, so I decided to put the stock pads back onto my K601 in preparation. I noticed a greater change in the sound than the last time I swapped them around (a long time ago now, perhaps even with my old amplifier), so I decided to test them again. After a lot...

    AKG K601 - Should I Upgrade?

Manufacture frequency specs for headphones are usually a load of crap. Sure, they probably can produce some kind of air movement at 12Hz or 18Hz, but it's not something you're going to hear (or rather feel when we're talking of frequencies that low) in practise with real music, where you're more...

Quote:   I guess it's possible that the washing powder could soften them, and perhaps affect the quality of the material too. I've not tried it so I can't say for sure, but I might give it a go as my pads aren't in the best condition.     Quote: From what I remember people...

    AKG K518DJ

I've opened one up before, and the hinges extend into the cup with a secure fit. I think you'd have to give the headphone quite a deliberate beating to break them; you'd probably sooner snap the headband adjusters than the hinges.

Indeed, a lack of foam discs would tip the sound a little in the treble's favour. You can also play around with thicker foam discs to tweak the sound slightly (I acquired some new foam discs, and they are considerably less dense than the originals - they let a lot of light through in...

AKG k240 mkII - looking for upgrade - [Solved] AKG k702

If you don't mind trying used headphones, the K240 Sextetts might suit you, especially if you can find an early or middle production model. I had a late production model, with the least bass of all the Sextett versions, yet it still had slightly more impact than the K601 (it didn't go as deep...

Most over rated genre (major boring) Your experience.

This modern metal stuff. I don't even know the genre, I just know how it sounds. I don't see the point in working kick drums and strumming guitars as fast as possible throughout a whole song, all the while singing like you've got something nasty down your throat so that you can't even produce...

    I like silbilance. Weird?

I think you're missing the OP's point. What I believe they're trying to say, and what I'm trying to say, is whilst we appreciate tight, punchy bass (rather than the one-note kind), we also appreciate relative clarity at the other end of the scale, rather than compressed sounding treble where...

    I like silbilance. Weird?

Unless extended treble is against one's taste, this is very much normal. As with your point about bass, sibilance is the other end of the scale, and you need reasonable extension and detail in both to avoid "compressed" sounding music, which is one of the biggest hates of audiophiles.   I...

    AKG K501 & 601.

Strange, because whilst I don't own the K701, I do currently have K701 pads on my K601, and the only major difference in regards to shape is that they're angled. I guess they must have changed the pad construction along the way some when.   Quote:

    Upgrading from a K271 MK II to a K601??

I'd stick with the larger jack to be honest. It's there because it's meant to be used with amplifiers / hi-fi equipment, and anything but a very small portable amp will have a jack that size, and probably as default, so you'd just have to convert up every time instead. But if you really must, I...

    Upgrading from a K271 MK II to a K601??

I don't know that much about the K271, but from what I've read the K601 may sound a bit warmer over-all. I'm not sure if it will have much more of a mid-bass punch over the K271, but I suspect it will have better deep-bass response at least. It'll probably be a bit more detailed and clearer as...

    AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

A few people in here mentioned recabling recently, but they were both for balanced set ups I believe, and otherwise I don't recall anyone saying they had recabled or the results it had produced. I would agree that you'd want to make it dual entry, else you'd still be using the headband wire anyway.

AKG K601 vs Sennheiser HD-598 (listening impressions and comparison)

Yeah, it can be depending on the material, but more-so I find that the treble can sound detached from the mid range with some metal recordings, making the sound a little empty.   Quote:

    Duran Duran (wooo!)

Heard a few of the songs from their new album on a live performance on YouTube and they weren't too bad, especially considering the few I had heard from the last two albums (I genuinely thought (Reach Up For The) Sunrise was done by S-Club 7 or some other come and go pop group, until recently)...
