Are they with the original earpads? I can say for sure that the MK1 that I have sounds exactly as you described on a specific pair of earpads. By the way, I have seen a few pairs of the HD 250 (MK1 and MK2) listed on eBay.

The Sennheizer HD540 Gold are great headphones. They have more elevated and more extended low frequencies compared to the non-gold version. Pairing with woth an OTL tubes amplifier would is the best opinion, exactly the same as with the HD250.

I tend to agree with you. Slightly warmer amplifiers are the way to go when it comes to the HD250 although they are still enjoyable on neutral sound amplifier.

Regarding your question. I have only owned two OTL amplifiers. The Xudoo and the Cern, which is hand-made. Yes, there is a noticeable difference between the two but I could enjoy the HD250 on both.
