New Jolida 100 cdp - need headphones

Any of the Grado models are easy to drive. I've owned Grado 60's, 325's and RS-1. All top performers in their given price range. Any of them, if you like the "Grado sound" should work nicely. I once owned a Jolida tube power amp. It was a very nice amp. Very musical and engaging. Everyone...

    Philips HP625

Nice prices for both of them. I happen to own both models and they are very nice (for the money) and when used within thier limits (dont A/B test them against Senn 600 or Grado RS1). The 550's have a nice deep bass, very easy to listen to and enjoy music with. The 625 are very different...

What were the greatest speakers you've ever heard?

So, what other speakers have struck you as "classic" over the years? And what was their greatest strength (midrange, bass, soundstaging...)? Accustat's (Spelling?) Never owned them but hung out at Stereo stores all the time. "Speed" was my initial attraction. Spica's Wide soundstage...

Good way to clean HP890 pads?

Try one of those sticky lint rollers. They work quite well on cloth pads and even speaker grill cloths (just dont press down on the tweeter dome).

How do you think about the Philips HP800?

I dont own the HP800's but I do have the HP820's. I like them quite alot. They are very comfortable and seem well built. The sound quality is very very good. They are much more like my Senn 580's than my Grado 350's or RS-1. They have a laid back sound with deep tight bass. I believe someone...

can I use 1/8W resistors for stepped attenuators?

One tip that I read on the welborne labs site: something like this: Once you build your stepped attenuator you can purchase a few of the super high quality (read: expensive Vishay, Caddock,Rodestien resistors) and use those in only two or three locations...the steps you listen to the most.

    Which Multimeter?

I too recommend Fluke. Mine is 15 years old and still perfect. But just a side note. If this is a home electronics bench a scope might serve you better in the long run. With 10x probs must scopes can handle almost any home diy project. (from a high voltage point, if needed) Plus it gives...

DIY I/C Cables - terminating advice for RCA and XLR

You've probably found the info you need but here is some additional info on the solder/mechanical end of it. If you are using silver wire I would also suggest silver solder as well. RadioShack sells it. Its very thin so I double up on the strands and twist them together. Its not expensive at...

    Listening To Headphones In Bed

I use my Grado's in bed all the time but just up to the point at which I know I wont wake up if I doze off. One neat thing about the Grado's (or any can with round earpads) is that as I lay on my back I put the headband on my forehead. Not bad at all.

    Grado Sr-225 or Sr-325 ? opinion please

As you progress up the audio food chain the improvements do get smaller and smaller....and the cost gets higher and higher. Only you can decide if that slight improvement is worth it. One thing I have learned over the years (audiophile since the age of 16) is this: Get what you really want the...

    DPDT A/B Switch for sources?

Tying the grounds together isnt going to hurt a thing. Look at a headphone plug, 3 contacts, the grounds ultimately get tied together (at least on the output side). Good, cheap wire you ask.....Teflon cat5 network cable. Steal some or get your I/T friends to bring you some from work...

Alps Potentiometers for a good price

In response to the Noble pots... So far I have used 8 mono pots (dual volume controls) and have a used stereo pot in the drawer. I have no complaints about Noble at all. I like them very much. I cant hear any difference between a true blue Alps and these but the applications were different...

Alps Potentiometers for a good price

With all this excitement I had to order a pair myself. We'll see what comes in the mail. I am fully aware that they are not going to be real ALPS (i have used several blues, and they dont look like this). I got mine off ebay from "audiotronincs_hk" The description states "stepped". I...

    Cleaning vintage volume controls

How do I keep bass when lowering gain?

Off topic but heres is one possible solution in a commercial form.....not DIY. Red Sound Micro amp has bass and treble controls. I know most audiophiles cant stand tone controls but I find this adds greatly to low volume listening. I can bump up the bass just a smidge on my Senn. 580...

    Cmoy sounds unbalanced

Maybe your volume control isnt tracking properly. I avoid this issue by always using a seperate volume control for each channel. This allows you to fine tune the volume and avoid using balance pots. Yes, I know its double the cost but I have always favored the dual volume control setup.

Are these good interconnect + hookup wire choices?

I second the pure copper route. I too have played with silver plated cable and have had mixed results. If you wanna experiment on the cheap buy a spool of wirewrap wire from Radio Shack. Its silver plated copper. Very thin, hard to strip but cheap enough to play with. The only...
