I've used a couple of the Dekoni Sheepskin and Velour pads and I'd recommend either of them - like the above comments with the Yaxi pads, the Dekoni also seem to have similar effects -the only downside is they do hot in the summer weather.

Well, I've got to say this Auralic gadget (Auralic Altairis bloody amazing sound - I thought that 'tweaking' the freq response on the RME ADC-2 dac gave good results but this new streamer unit, without any alteration in freq response, is extraordinary and also similar results with the Hifi man...

That's interesting, what are they? - looking forwards to the results - I've found big differences in aftermarket/better Dekoni pads for my HiFiman He-500s, maybe similar for the AKGs ... Strangely, I'm off to audition an Auralic Altair G1 streamer (high-end streamer/dacs is new territory -...

    K701 thread

It's a rather startling thing that these "old things" are getting on in years (30+?) but haven't radically changed their overall sound characteristics and that some of us would be/are quite happy to listen to these instead of some of the multi-thousand $ units that are saturating today's...

= Hifiman “Fuzzor” Mod = (Driver backwave felt damping modification)

Aah, thanks for the advice - will resist the temptation - apparently they're rewally cheap at about A$220 incl freight. My 2nd hand HE-500 came with the HE-350 headband and the nice cushions and the average quality cable so I tried a couple of the usual cable changes like belden, etc and some...

= Hifiman “Fuzzor” Mod = (Driver backwave felt damping modification)

Thanks for that, and following up on your "Toneboosters" link. I like your description of the eq adjustments The 1900 Hz trough is crucial, A small bass boost, a little dip needed in the lower mids, and 3 treble cuts against the pernicious ringing, and a slight rise over 14k. I was looking...

= Hifiman “Fuzzor” Mod = (Driver backwave felt damping modification)

Aah, how a few minutes changes one's perspective! The thin soft felt somehow made these cans sound like the k701s (AKG) - the extra clarity comes with the price of a remarkable altered freq response - no idea why this should happen. So, replaced half of the previous stiff felt strips and this...

= Hifiman “Fuzzor” Mod = (Driver backwave felt damping modification)

How interesting - the stiff felt padding strips were fairly easy to apply after trimming them to a bit thinner than 4mm (about 1/8" in practice) - I found that starting laying the ends closer to the centre bar to be easier and extended them full length to the outer fabric ring made it simpler -...

Reviving a rather old thread and not sure if anyone's reading this I think these old headphones show such good qualities that many people are still using them - I find the sound to be rather good indeed with a couple of mods - using ViaBlue headphone cable was a big one, replacing the back...

Yeah, with a bit of patience, you can alter the sound to an enormous degree - in fact, there's no difficulty in replicating Shane Olive's Harmon Curve settings if you particularly wanted that sound - the only think I'd like to add would be the possibility to perhaps add a 'valve' characteristic...

I think you might have something there about the extra "grunt" of the Cayin amp but unsure about the cables, particularly the one on the 'more recent' Quincy Jones version - my older k701s have had after-market for so long I can't remember the original sound but it wasn't all that bad and I...

    Ayre Acoustics "Codex" DAC/Headphone Amp

I wonder if anyone is still interested in this product but I've found a rather unusual "thing" about them that might be of interest - I recently added one of those "audiolab dc block" devices to the mains supply (230v/50Hz in Australia) and the improvement in the clarity is rather surprising -...

    K701 thread

I think they're all slightly different but only by a small amount - I've mainly got a couple of the k701s including the Quincy Jones ones and played around with the cables a bit where there's quite noticeable change - to me, the older ones do sound 'better' but that just might be familiarity...

... and they're still very dependent on using a rather good quality headamp too and upgrading the stock supplied cable - even though they're old design, still one of the best overall balanced sound with no fatigue at all

    Clone Note LDR Attenuator

I Uriah, I hope the Covid hasn't 'crimped' your business establishing too much and you and your family are okay. I'm about to assemble the new kit you sent with the Dave Slagle 'autotransformer as the attenuator instead of the resistors and including a simple B1 buffer (diyA Hypnotize project)...

Massdrop x Alex Cavalli Tube Hybrid Amp (CTH) - Dropping Monday

This experiment with the 6sn7s is rather interesting and if the amp is happy with the extra heater current, it opens up the range/quality of this project yet again - eagerly waiting the soak test results, Guido. If the parts get too hot, could the use of mini clip-on/glue heatsinks assist?

Massdrop x Alex Cavalli Tube Hybrid Amp (CTH) - Dropping Monday

I found a bit of a problem with the 6c8g tube sitting hard on top of the case without full pin insertion in the adapter socket (6922 ->6c8g socket) so I disassembled the unit and enlarged the hole on top to 38mm (1.5") then added a 'tube-guard' (I think it's for the kt88 tubes) and this enlarged...

Massdrop x Alex Cavalli Tube Hybrid Amp (CTH) - Dropping Monday

I tried a couple of different ones but was unsure about good pin contact and/or 2 units 'in series', I pulled the case apart and carefully cut the larger hole - the guard comes apart so just drilled the 3 holes and bolted it on - I only got the larger one for the 6c8g as the smaller 9 pin tubes...

Massdrop x Alex Cavalli Tube Hybrid Amp (CTH) - Dropping Monday

I found an adapter for the 6c8g on eBay and it was too short - had to enlarge the hole on top (38mm dia) to fit the metal jacket socket - socket now fits flush with top surface. Found a 'tube guard' on Alixpress to protect the exposed tube.

Massdrop x Alex Cavalli Tube Hybrid Amp (CTH) - Dropping Monday

Cut a bigger hole on top so the top of the adapter socket is nearly at the top of the case and the 6c8g valve sits proud above that - a tube guard is recommended as the 6c8g is a tall tube. I tried the Kenrad version of the 6c8g but prefer the TungSol as it has a much clearer sound - the linear...

This is another version of the AMB Sigma 11 regulator by Zerozone - this one uses the film cap on the output and good quality components - a bit of a bargain at this price [notice that the photo shows the Sigma 22 (or their S22 designation) that provides both '+' and ' -' voltages (see the...

Massdrop x Alex Cavalli Tube Hybrid Amp (CTH) - Dropping Monday

Well that's a different problem indeed - definitely worth keeping it in mind elsewhere - novel solution - who would expect that! The TS 6c8g does take quite a few hours to 'come good' altho not at all bad straight away - the detail will improve and the bass will cleanup a lot. Could you send...

Massdrop x Alex Cavalli Tube Hybrid Amp (CTH) - Dropping Monday

You might find that the 'saver doesn't go fully into the base socket so there might be a poor connection - I ended up enlarging the hole on the top of the case (to 38mm) so the convertor socket would fit directly into the socket on the pcb so the base of the 6C8G now sits flush with the top...
