I have a pair of k701s, and i think they are good for rock (especially extended periods of listening)... the bass isn't over powering, so there is less fatigue (at least for me), it seems to do all types of music well, female vocals are excellent.

The look of the md10 is better than the svdac05 for sure. I haven't heard of it, but seems to be not a heck of a lot of difference specification wise. adding $200 to ur budget definitely opens a lot of doors. good luck!

Just to pitch in my 2 cents, k701s really need an amp to shine, using it directly out of an ipod will work.. but about 60% of its potential is locked away... I would say all headphones sound better with an amp, but the k701 with a proper amp becomes hi-fi.

hey, welcome to the club, i love my k701s with my md10 and computer as source. Indeed the magic starts showing up around 300-500hrs... sometimes even later. They are very enjoyable despite what ppl say here at this forum.

There is a cheap 24/96 usb to spdif card from musiland called the Lilo III, maybe worth checking it out... less than $50.

I am plugged in to a 2.0 usb, but still this thing intermittently losses signal... i have checked cpu usage... there is nothing abnormal. Even if I am not playing music, it will still "click" (losing signal sometimes)

Hmm... so I bought a Musiland external usb card to go with my Musiland MD-10, now i have a new problem... I can upsample to 96khz, however... it will periodically lose connection... (the md10 will indicate that there is no input)... and it will click back and forth between 96khz and no signal...

I would say try the HD555. I know the price is abit higher than these here... but last time I checked they were less than $100 USD. Try them at a store, they maybe worth the bang for the bit extra buck.

Well if you must, the C&C XO (portable amp) maybe something you can consider... its around the $200 mark. It can push the k701, and its appreciable for portable equipment... but i agree with what people say here... at $150... max... you won't get much out of the k701.
