It was mentioned earlier, but I believe you were confused on all of the use cases for dongles. You can use them with your phone, PC, laptop, etc...and they have tiny form factors. There are some great options for around $100 like the E1DA 9038D or the Hidizs S9. Problem solved.

Why don't you try EQ on your headphones before spending thousands of dollars on equipment? Also look at finding a balanced DAC to connect to the XE via XLR instead of RCA to maximize performance.

For me it gives a nice increase to the bass and sub-base response. I can achieve the same thing using EQ, but it's nice to plug and play. If you have EQ on your Fiio, then just use that, otherwise I say go for it.

What you are proposing simply won't work. Smartphone > USB-C > Modi DAC > nowhere. The only way to use the Modi is to connect it's RCA-out to an amplifier, and then your headphones into said amp.

If the 8XX cannibalizes the 800S, Drop still has to buy it from them and then they have the option of discontinuing the "S" and possibly replacing it. If it doesn't then they keep on selling the 800S; either way they still make $$$ and have optionality.
