If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

After trying the ER4SR again after almost 3 months of using the ER4XR, I still view the ER4SR is much cleaner and the flatter bass is much better as I'm noticing moments where 4XR bass wither stock or EQ'd up starts cloud the mids/treble. I think I might keep the ER4XR as for moments where I...

    Tidal vs Spotify

I love how mad folk get that LAME MP3 at V0 is transparent on everything and even competitive with newer codecs. Song too hot at 22KHz? just use a 17KHz Low pass, Pre-echo/smearing even if mild? just use allshort with LAME 3.99(Dev versions).

Also It seems like /r/headphones and /r/audiophile are now attacking anyone who uses Lossy codecs in the most immature manner possible. Posted a thread about MP3 was called a moron for not using lossless or AAC, When I call them out I get left at -4.

    Tidal vs Spotify

I love how well LAME MP3 performs even at V2(192kbps VBR) towards AAC/Vorbis, I can't tell V2 from lossless 99% of the time when I do I just up the track to V0. What more ironic they never once cry about games using Vorbis/MP3 for sounds/music, DVD-video lasting 20+ years with AC-3 at 192k...

Somehow manged to get the ER4XR to mimic 2XR bass with the Speed/Detail that the ER4XR has.

    FLAC vs. 320 Mp3

That why I switched to Musepack at 175kbps since I've never found a sample that breaks --standard setting. Yet folk at HydrogenAudio love telling me that MPC at 170 ~ 240kbps should be easy despite never posting any samples/ABX logs especially at Q7(240kbps).

    What makes an IEM "technical"?

The very high detail on ER4XR could be unmasking recording noise that a DD would mask from It slow decay smearing the mid range. I've been using BA IEM's for so long I find even Dynamic speakers quite dirty sounding.

    Upsampling 2, the electric boogaloo?

It why Opus codec uses 48KHz despite only holding 20KHz. The Musepack devs had a chart showing at 48KHz MP3 being more stable while at 32KHz it was much worse, Voice can trigger pre-echo if they use sharp sounds. In FLAC this Is a non-issue.

    Upsampling 2, the electric boogaloo?

It forces MP3 to use it short blocks from longer scanning since the codec is basically 2 lossy models(Subband + MDCT) duck taped together, It allows the MDCT layer more time to understand what Subband layer handing over without It rushing. It not about forcing MP3 to do 22KHz.

    What makes an IEM "technical"?

The ER4XR average THD is 0.8 ~ 1.6%, Yet many state It sounds just as clear as the ER4SR and Planar that are <0.4% THD wise.

    Upsampling 2, the electric boogaloo?

Doing 48KHz with high bit rate MP3 seems really help with problem samples, It probably the only case where up-sampling is a benefit.

New IEM trend: Isobaric DD design. Benefits?

Even Single BA IEM's like the ER4XR can hold up, Since It seems to have no issue mimicking the ER2XR's bass with EQ. I actually loved the ER2XR but the DD sounded like It choked when there was heavy bass and It got worse in faster music.

You can do -2db at 150Hz(Q1.5) On both the ER4XR & ER2XR to have a sub bass focused sound.

If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

The ER4SR pretty much like Planar/E-stat in that It like looking through a 100% clean window while dynamic's are dirty in comparison. On the ER3/ER4 guitars & drums sound separate but on DD IEM/Over ears they can blur into each other from a long bass decay.

    FLAC vs. 320 Mp3

Yep. That why I use V2 since I find It much more robust than 192kbps AAC/Vorbis for Dark Ambient & Noise when A/B'd samples in the past. Still view my hearing suits the perceptual model that LAME uses over what AAC & Vorbis use.

    FLAC vs. 320 Mp3

Funny how the --allshort switch in Lame dev encoders actually fixes pre-echo issues. Since I still view It LAME struggling to switch to short blocks fast enough in noiser & complex sections than MP3 as a whole failing. It makes LAME at V2 ~ V0 & 320Kbps very competitive to AAC & Vorbis.

    FLAC vs. 320 Mp3

Starting to think --quality 64 is more stable than 96 as I get no distortions from View from Nhil(HNW at It most Ambient). Noticed It uses 17KHz lowpass which ironically gives a gain over Opus at 128kbps since It not running into 16KHz ~ 22KHz stealing bits, But I view AAC being 1024 x 128 helps...

    FLAC vs. 320 Mp3

Been A/B'ing 128kbps AAC(Apple, --quality 64) vs 192kbps LAME MP3. They both sound the same with AAC-LC actually sounding cleaner. When i used Noise/Experimental as stress test AAC at 128kbps would reach 275kbps with upper max being 320kbps in heavy sections.

    FLAC vs. 320 Mp3

LAME MP3 supports 24-bit audio but only at 44.1KHz meaning the dynamic range is the same, At V2 the bit rate will reach 240 ~ 320k at louder parts. Doing forced -Y stops It stealing bits from under 16KHz when It not needed, Much better than doing hard 16KHz lowpass.

    FLAC vs. 320 Mp3

LAME MP3 at V0 can pretty much do 24-bit/44.1KHz but forced -Y would stop the 16KHz ~ 22KHz area steal bits from under 16KHz area.

    FLAC vs. 320 Mp3

It has almost the same support as MP3. There no reason to use MP3 these days if your tight on memory as AAC outperforms It.

So you can't read the first post showing LAME at V2 being on par with than xHE-AAC at 96kbps?. Have you even tried Opus and xHE-AAC at 96kbps or just joining another troll. Opus at 96kbps is 20Hz ~ 20KHz It only 12KHz at 16kbps a 2 second google about Opus would. Have you actually tried Opus or...
