If your speakers don't move, you can move yourself. I measured a 7.1 room with my two speakers and didn't move them at all. I made multiple PRIR rooms with different speaker locations and combined them later.

I went ahead and bought Apple AV Adaptor and tested with my iPad Air 2. With Netflix and other apps. Whenever I plug the adapter in the picture and sound is redirected to HDMI and the iPad is used as a remote control interface. So no, my use case does not work the way I would like to.
