They are 100mm or 105mm circular pads, no problem getting the attenuator and fixing ring on. They have a rectangular earhole - I originally bought them to try on my T50RPs.

Tried the knockoff THX00 AE pads - slightly larger earhole than stock pads, softer foam. I used 3D printed mounting rings and attenuators from thingiverse - it's the attenuator that gives the deeper sub bass and more mid bass than without. I was really surprised too, that's what I thought initially but the test was fine. I had glued up the original 3.5mm socket as it is effectively another bass port and I think some of the cotton wool had shifted around. Once I opened them up and adjusted the cotton wool everything was good.

I always check any modded headphones with a 1 minute fast headphone test on YouTube. Steering, phase and polarity were fine.

I'll keep my eye out for a second hand pair. My current go to for sound signature is the dt150. Hopefully getting a dt250 as well. Modded a pair of AKG k52, balanced with dt770 pads, not bad for £25!

Picked up a pair of X2HR from eBay for £60. Crispy but clear treble, great clarity. mid and subbass when called for, find that EQing even just a touch more bass makes things too muddy. Very nice fit but heavy after a couple of hours. Better fit than Amiron which wouldn't seal behind ears...

Many thanks to @OspreyAndy for the tips. Bought a pair secondhand for £10, put new Beyer DT770 velour pads on. Much better. They need to be relatively shallow or a lot of the focus and bass is lost for me. The foam disc supplied with the pads removed too much of the mids, making it very shouty...
