What are the exact alt preset standard settings?
If space is your main consideration and you're not planning to play it on quality equipment, then MPC might not be your best option. Try Ogg Vorbis -q4 or AAC at 96 kbps VBR instead. You need to check Hydrogen Audio forums for information on encoding. If you definitely want to stick with MP3...- atici

What are the exact alt preset standard settings?
Why don't you check Hydrogen Audio forums ? It has nothing to do with CDEx but the version of LAME you're using. You should be using --alt-preset for highest quality, therefore you don't have anything you can change apart from that in the command line. Quality goes like this...- atici

Sony D-NE1 vs iRiver 550?
AFAIK VBR is not a MP3 standard. That's why i-River doesn't officially support it either (or do they now?). It is not guaranteed that your player won't skip etc. when you play a VBR. Having said this, I never noticed any problem. I am sure Sony player should support it, and I for one am sure...- atici

Sony ATRAC quality tolerable?
Re: ProFingerSk8er Read the thread at Hydrogen Audio carefully. I started it and it was about ATRACplus first. But then a little bit below 128kbps LAME MP3 is compared to ATRAC LP2. Hydrogen Audio people seem to be a lot more knowledgeable when it comes to audio compression and they support...- atici

Re: ProFingerSk8er But you also said on some other thread ATRAC beats MP3 hands down, which can't simply be true. Read Hydrogen Audio and see what they said. Re: Blessingx I agree with you. Re: D-EJ915 I'd fortunately never be forced to use WMA because there're always better...- atici

I forgot to ask. Can you explain me or show me a thread (I did a search and read all the info I could find) comparing ATRAC LP2 (not a MP3 transcode) to a LAME MP3? ATRAC SP is not supported in NW-MS70D unfortunately. Also how do you tag the ATRAC files? Is there a way to keep the...- atici

Sony D-NE1 vs iRiver 550?
Get Sony. Its dial is probably infinitely better looking, priced at $199 , has a better skip protection, awesome enginnering and construction. But it won't be upgradeable. I like i-River and competition, future upgradability... But i-River players look like a toy to me and plasticky in feel...- atici

Sony ATRAC quality tolerable?
Guys how do you like ATRAC LP2 ? Is it tolerable in quality. I was looking into the portable players and am really tempted into new Sony NW-MS70D. It is so good looking. Maybe an ATRAC decoder is easier and costs less to make (as encoding is faster) and that could explain why Sony is this...- atici

How do you compare EX70 vs EX71 ? What is improved? That's exactly what I wanted to figure out but never seen mentioned anywhere. Is there a quality difference or a difference in fit?
