The player (foobar or jriver) is adding 0s to the stream so that it matches your bit depth setting (24 or 32). The DAC lies at the end of that stream and a change in firmware probably couldn't affect that. There's no way D50 could tell if the original source is 16, 24, or 32bit.

Not sure if it's the firmware which controls that since there are those with version 1.03 and got bit depth displayed. Can those with 1.03 confirm? I don't think it's a big deal as long as it does not indicate problem with the DAC itself. If you like I would gladly swap with you. :beyersmile:

Mystery solved! I phoned Topping customer service just now, and the person told me that bit depth display has been removed from the latest models of the D50. It used to display bit depth as whatever you set at the player (24 or 32) and not the actual bit depth of the streamed audio. Bit depth...

That seems to be the only explanation left. I have exhausted all options: tested it on Win8.1, Win10, updated Win10 to latest build, even tested on my Android tablet. Same result: blank space where there should be bit depth. I haven't got a response from Topping yet. Will call tomorrow.

I just updated Windows 10 to the latest build and when I connect - BAM - Windows recognize D50 without drivers or setup. Problem persists: D50 display shows sample rate but not bit depth. I am really exhauted - update took 7 hours. Don't know what to do. :(

People with correct bitrates displayed, what is your OS? Mine is Windows 8.1. With optical cable mine always show "00Bits", googling shows others have the same results with SPDIF. Anyway I just wrote Topping cumtomer service.

Can anyone confirm if your D50 displays "bitrate" at all? Mine only does when playing DSD files ("1Bit"), but shows a blank when playing PCM sources. I thought this is normal behaviour until I looked up pictures of it. It does display sample rates correctly. I am connecting with usb.

I tested again and you can play DSD with only the drivers. You just need to reboot afterwards.

I have yet to comment on the sound quality. Compared to my older DAC (Topping D3), the D50 sounds more three dimensional. I listened to Die Walküre on speakers and the soft whispers sound like they are right beside my ears. Or I could be suffering from the placibo effect. ;)

Just placed an order for the D50. A question: If I'm playing DSD files, does it have to be in exclusive mode, say through WASAPI or ASIO? In other words, I cannot have game audio while playing DSD music at the same time? Thanks!

Do I need to use the driver that comes with it if I am using Windows 8.1? I've heard it is only necessary if you are using ASIO. Also, does it matter which USB port I use? I'll have to use my PC's front panel port if I am aiming for a shorter cable. Thanks!

That's a good find. Ironic, isn't it? Shorter cables being more expensive. I guess that's because it serves a very specific niche market. I just want to reduce cable clutter.
