    Sennheiser HD 660S2 thread

Matt, you've expressed my thoughts on the S2's so well. The 650 has been my friend. They've never been the least bit rude in any way. That said, we all know their shortcomings in the lower end and many would say they're a bit veiled toward the top. Overall these have been the best compromises to...

    Sennheiser HD 660S2 thread

Yesterday morning I said the same thing to my wife about the 600 family of cans. My statement was more " Sennheiser takes basically the same plastic housing, ear pads, etc they've been using for decades and gets this much change in sound." The difference though, I was complaining about the cost...

    Sennheiser HD 660S2 thread

I received my S2's Friday. I first listened to them a bit using a GE 5814 tubed XDuoo TA-10 I've had for several years. I know and like the rolled off top end. The mids are friendlier to my ears than many other combos too. That said, the amp simply doesn't do these S2's justice. I switched to a...

    Sennheiser HD 660S2 thread

I was tempted a time or two when the S2 went on sale @ $499. I really had a battle when I found them under $400. Depending on your own perspective, don't know if I won or lost? I had $300 available on a card at Crutchfield, so I added $99 + tax with it and have the S2's on the way. I've never...

    Sennheiser HD 660S2 thread

Your description is fairly close to my perception. I think the 660s I owned were more grainy like the 58X. The bass did seem better controlled, but to my ears mine were more similar than not to the 58X. I think the 58X are an exceptional value. If I didn't already have a well broken in set, I'd...

Monoprice Monolith THX 887 - Impressions Thread

After spending a bit more time with the MP amp overall I'm pleased with it's performance. My first impression was that it seemed a bit anemic considering its claimed power. Like other things in life, first impressions are often skewed by preconceptions, etc. The amp has paired well with most...

    Sennheiser HD 660S2 thread

I owned a pair of the original 660S cans that I after a while found somewhat fatiguing to my senses. Not that they were bad, just not as warm and friendly as the 650 signature. If I want a more 660S sound I simply plug in HD 58's. I'm struggling with even trying the S2. Of all the mid tier cans...

Monoprice Monolith THX 887 - Impressions Thread

My Magni II volume control did the same thing. I was able to remove to cover and clean the pot with contact cleaner I have where I work. You would think that scratchy pots would be a thing of the past. With multi layer boards component replacement ain't always as as simple as simply soldering a...

Monoprice Monolith THX 887 - Impressions Thread

Yea, I've been surprised by how little difference there is between mid and high gain when using either of the Sennheiser cans. My first thought using the Xduoo dac was lower output level. I know the Xduoo is lower volume than the Modi Multibit. It may be more of a matter of me adjusting to the...

Monoprice Monolith THX 887 - Impressions Thread

Price definitely sells. After letting this amp (887) get by me several times when on sale, I quickly pulled the trigger on it at $168. I've only had it a few days. Connected it to an AKM based XDUOO, an older Modi and a Modi Multibit all single ended ins and out. Also dynamic driver cans are...

Schiit Magni 3+ and Magni Heresy - Impressions Thread

Has anyone confirmed whether or not the Magni 3 volume control issues have been resolved in these latest releases? My M3 has developed both the scratchy noises around 10 o'clock and obvious channel imbalances at lower volumes. Yea, warranty has expired!

    New AKG headphones K175, K245, K275

Been doing some more listening mixing components. First I've removed the tube from the chain on the K245's source. I used an old Schiit Magni 2 Uber amp and a Modi Multibit dac. The sound is much different. The bass clarity has changed the most. I don't know if it's what I'd consider as better...

    New AKG headphones K175, K245, K275

After going back reading some of the earlier post this morning it appears that I've plagiarized you a bit in my earlier post. It was unintentional. In my case I'm thinking it's likely two sick, no we'll go with great minds thinking very much alike... While my 245 have very little head time...

    New AKG headphones K175, K245, K275

I wanted the K245's as soon as they were announced some two and a half years ago. I gave up, moved on. Now I see them everywhere for $80? It looks as if Samsung is wasting no time in dumping these last hurrah from the old Vienna design team cans. I just unboxed a set an hour or so ago...

xDuoo TA-10: Excellent hybrid tube headphone amp/DAC/preamp

I just got mine TA-10 3 or 4 days ago, so far so good. I test drove a Schiit Vali a year or so ago and was not impressed with it at all. I've been using mostly Schiit solid state amps with Peachtree Audio Sabre and Schiit Modi Multibit dacs to drive my various mid-fi cans. This new all in one...

    58X vs 660s

No, I don't think I can describe the 660 as being any less forward. I would describe the 660 as being less aggressive and more natural in lower regions. To me the 660 sound is more typical of an open back, where the 58X sound for the most part really isn't. .

    58X vs 660s

Difficult for me to describe the difference, however it's a noticeable amount. The 660 is delivers instruments and vocals around your ears with an airier presentation. In comparison the 58X sound more like closed back cans.

    58X vs 660s

After a few days listening to both the 660 S and the 58X (stock and foam removed), I've made some observations. These two cans share many traits, looks, fit, 150 ohm rated drivers, etc, but to my ears they simply don't sound that much alike. I'm not taking anything away from the 58X, mine have...

Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?

I received my 660's yesterday. They are the original 508231 style Romania manufacture, and they're quite impressive! These are the liveliest Sennheiser cans I've ever experienced. As I'm typing I'm enjoying the Gary Moore box set.

Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Review & Measurements

I've had the 58X cans for around a month. Price is the only reason I even considered giving the expected veiled sound another whirl. They sound nothing like any other Sennheiser I've tried. To my ears these manage to tame much of the harshness without sounding veiled. Properly fed the bass is...

Monoprice Monolith M1060 and M560 Planar Headphones

I realize I'm basically repeating an earlier post, but these replacement 1060's sound nothing like my first ones. My first ones disappointed me with their lack of authority and detailed bass. After owning planar loudspeakers I'm well aware that planar drivers need time to loosen up a bit so I...

Monoprice Monolith M1060 and M560 Planar Headphones

After returning my broken V2 1060's I received my replacements Tuesday. These are an entirely different animal than my first set purchased in late late November. These actually have a very smooth lively bass that my previous ones never had. I'm beginning to wonder if the first set were wired out...

Monoprice Monolith M1060 and M560 Planar Headphones

No, they were not dropped. They have been on my head and placed face down on a shelf since received. I don't know how long they've been broken as I never look at the front of them. Monoprice has sent me an RMA and assure me that I will receive new ones in their place. I'm thinking I will likely...
