The mod for variable output was done at the factory (for which IIRC, they charged an extra $100). Not sure exactly what it involved, but it's definitely not as simple as opening up the unit and changing a jumper.

No interference problem for me with the Cayin about 2 feet from my PC and 4 feet from my router.

You might try spraying some contact cleaner into the input selector knob. (My DACmini has never had this problem, but my car did, and contact cleaner fixed it.)
