This is a used pair of AKG K240II headphones. Sound-wise, they are identical to the K240 as far as I know. They have a warm, mellow sound with slightly exaggerated mid-bass to make up for their lack of deeper bass. The headband is a little misshapen but otherwise they are in great condition...- SirMagnificat

This is a pair of the original Grado PS500s (not the e model) which are among the most neutral Grados. They have a warm sound and make cellos and acoustic instruments sound great, with a bit of Grado sparkle in the treble (but not too much). Comes with the original box. These have a 1/4" plug...- SirMagnificat

Grado GH-1 Discussion
I don't find the bass recessed or light on the GH1. Compared to other Grados I've heard, they have a much more balanced presentation of treble and bass. I did think they had slightly more treble than bass, but only by a bit. It's been a while since I listened to them, and I only used the L-pads.- SirMagnificat

Grado GH-1 Discussion
Shameless plug: I'm selling a pair of used Grado GH1s. I really like them, but I just have too many pairs of headphones at the moment. I'd say these and the PS500s are the most neutral Grados that I've heard; the GH1s are a bit brighter than neutral, and the PS500s are a bit darker than neutral...- SirMagnificat

Massdrop x Focal Elex Review & Measurements
I have very similar taste to you (also quite sensitive to upper mids), and I think you'd prefer either the Utopia, Clear, or Elex since the Elear has pretty exaggerated bass. It's good bass (great bass, actually), and I can see why some would like the tuning, but it's really too much if you...- SirMagnificat

2017 Audio Technica new flagship ATH-ADX5000
Hi David. A lot of the people interested in this headphone fall into 2 camps. The first are people who like the AD series of AT headphones (like the AD-900x), which are brighter headphones tuned for female vocals with a very large soundstage. These are really popular with gamers. The second...- SirMagnificat

Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions
According to the Sonarworks review, they are a bit elevated in the 6.5–9kHz region, so maybe you're sensitive to a peak there?- SirMagnificat

Sennheiser x Massdrop HD6XX Review / Preview - Head-Fi TV
I'd say "no" because they will sound much closer to the Momentum than a pair of Grados, even the warmer/bassier ones (PS500 and GH-1 are the ones I've heard and liked). Specifically, the HD650s are known for their rolled off treble, which is often called the "Sennheiser veil". You will also need...- SirMagnificat

Mayflower Arc
According to the video, the DSP is just a minor bass boost. IIRC, the optical input was stereo only, so that makes sense. If you're looking for virtual surround, you'll want to look elsewhere. Personally, I used to prefer Dolby Headphones but after using plain stereo for a while, I actually find...- SirMagnificat

Official Pittsburgh 2017 Meet - July 22nd - Music to My Ear
I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it, but if I can I can bring along the following: Headphones: Audio Technica R70x AKG k7xx Grado PS500 and GH-1 Amps: JDS Labs Element I'm definitely interested in trying out some tube amps like the Bottlehead Crack since I've heard the R70x and Senn...- SirMagnificat

Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions
@paradoxology, I would also really like to hear your thoughts on how the R70x compares to the HD6XX and HE-400i. I've been thinking about getting a pair of HD6XX when the next drop happens.- SirMagnificat

Best Gaming Headphones for me. current ones aren't good.
I really like the AKG k7xx for gaming since they have great soundstage/imaging and bass (so music sounds full, unlike say the AT AD700X). I haven't heard the k701 so I'm not sure how much more bass they have over that model. I also have the AT r70x which I prefer for music over the k7xx (better...- SirMagnificat

The AKG K7XX Massdrop First Edition Thread
I own both the k240 and k7xx, and the k7xx are much more comfortable. This is because the pads have a much larger diameter, so they will be truly circumaural. The k240 pads have a small opening, so my ears tend to brush up against them. In addition, the pads are soft velour rather than pleather...- SirMagnificat

Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions
Yes. It's not as good a deal as the HD6xx for $200, but if you're interested in this headphone I'd say go for it. Just be aware of the return policy, or rather lack of return policy. If you end up not liking them, you'll need to resell them.- SirMagnificat

Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions
You still need your Mako control pod (which is the amplifier for your speakers); a headphone amp can't power speakers. You would plug the output of the headphone amp into the Mako control knob. What's potentially annoying about using the Magni 2 is that you will have 2 volume knobs that...- SirMagnificat

Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions
Your soundcard does indeed have an amp. The output of the card is probably a line level output, meaning it's a fixed volume which is intended to be used with an external amplifier. Tou could certainly plug in your R70x to this output – it just might not sound as good or go as loud as...- SirMagnificat

Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions
You probably want something with a line out (outputs constant volume) or preamp out (volume knob controls output volume) to send audio to both the speakers and your headphones. You'd send the audio to the headphone amp, then send the (secondary) output of that to your speakers. I'm not sure what...- SirMagnificat

Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions
At that price, there are a lot of really good options, it's really impossible to say what is "best". The Sennheister HD600, for example, is very similar to the R70x and highly regarded. The AKG k7xx (Massdrop only) is also similar and quite a bit cheaper; it has a wider soundstage but...- SirMagnificat

M-Audio HDH50 - the successor to the popular Q40
Having spent some time listening to the HDH50s, I really love their sound – very neutral, no harsh peaks, and great imaging. These really seem like a hidden gem of a headphone. I also tried the Sennheister Momentum 2s, and I find the HDH50s clearly superior sonically (and they're cheaper).- SirMagnificat

Comparisons: 36 of the Top Closed/Portable Headphones Around
I really liked the sound of the Momentum 2s, but I didn't love them. They sounded much more natural than the H6s, but every once in a while a sound would jump out that I knew shouldn't be there (my main headphones are Audio Technica R70x's which are nearly ruler flat). It was nothing major – I...- SirMagnificat

Introducing the Immersive PC 373D
Did you listen to the link I posted? Because if you did, there's no way you'd believe that headphones aren't sufficient for convincing surround sound. "The way sound bounces off things" is exactly what Dolby Headphones simulates. It's accounting for how each channel interacts with the...- SirMagnificat

Introducing the Immersive PC 373D
I'm not sure if you're trolling or not, but Dolby Headphones and other virtual surround processors do provide a noticeable improvement in spatial positioning. As Mad Lust noted, it's particularly obvious for sounds behind you. You don't need 5 or 7 speakers to achieve this – after all, you only...- SirMagnificat

Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions
One other thing worth noting for anyone on the fence about this headphone: I have a smaller head and wear glasses, and I find the wing system works really well with these. I also have the Audio Technica ad500x's, and those fit me horribly unless I use the rubber band mod (where you loop a rubber...- SirMagnificat
