I'm not sure about the 2.5mm cable. I ended up going with over ear wear due to microphonics, but I am somewhat sensitive to that... I'm not sure how to tell you exactly how much of a problem it is.

If I have a phone with slightly greater power output (like an HTC 10 or Zte axon7) is it possible to drive the pinnacle sufficiently well or do they really require an amp?

i tried them in store briefly and was not very pleased with the fit or sound quality, but perhaps I didn't get a good enough seal since the eartip selection was limited and the memorywire was too thick to sit under my glasses

You might like the R2a or r2ss from flare, but there will be some microphonics when worn down
