I don't know about your headphones, but I had the  ATH-M40x and they are a little dark and the soundstage is a little small. The f07k is also a little darker and soundstage is a lit small compared to the e10k.  Somwhere I reed that the m50's are the same than the m40x, you just pay 50 more for...

the volume, gain, and bass only take effect in the headphone output.     The line out port is I believe a 2mv signal and does stay at the same volume at all times.    Both outputs work at all times, no matter if one or the other is unplugged.

This may be very obvious, but since you mention no effect on the gain switch, maybe you have the headphones plugged in the "line out" instead of the headphone jack?   other than that, a config problem with your pc or a defective unit is all I can think of.
