I'm probably going to be wrong, but I assume the 77x's level of base is near the same level as the SZ2000's, but the SZ2000's are better as a whole.  Does hip hop include dub/trapstep?

I suppose that's where my ignorance hurts a lot.  I'm going to get it eventually.  What is gain throttling?      

Just tried paper test again and produced a very small ripple in one corner before it started distorting.  I have stock pads so perhaps that's why it doesn't move paper.   

The way I have mine setup, which I'm an amateur, is that after about 45% volume on the e12 it distorts and it's still NOT so loud that I can't handle it.  I figured when it distorts like that, eventually it will blow.  

That's what I thought might be the case.  I ordered a pair of replacements on ebay today and later realized they didn't look anything like the ones that come with HA-M55x's.  I don't know if I even should as I have this feeling I'll end up blowing this phones.  

Do you have to buy a pair of HA-M55x's to get the pads?

That's scary!  I have only the SZ2k and I'm afraid that if I mess them up I'll be screwed!     How do these compare to the MR77x's?  HBB stated the SZ2000's are much better than the m55x, but what about the 77's?  

My rookie setting is the Fiio e12 with bass boost, gain on, amp volume around 75%, windows volume at 100% with 50Hz boost at 18db.  I'd say that means no EQing except that windows setting mentioned by someone else on the forum.     I know I don't have them eq'd to bring out their max potential...

  Would random popping sounds be considered crackling?  Sometimes I think sound device and other times the actual head phones.  

I'm using the Fiio E12.     Distort them when turning them up to loud.  Mostly happens when listening to decaf stuff.  I suppose too much for some headphones.
