Going minimalist can be nice, too. I recently was wowed by Bobby McFerrin's "Don't worry be happy" - never listened to it on headphones before!

My first impressions were the same,coming from a Senn 598. X2s seem bloated at first but will tighten up with burn-in. They'll always be warm-sounding, but in such a nice way.

For sound quality, X2 is absolutely an upgrade from 598 (I had initially owned 598 but returned them after comparing to the X2). The only thing I prefer the 598 for is comfort - X2 is comfortable, but really big - definitely not for outside of the home!

Nope. I'm trying to be fiscally responsible - but have come dangerously close in recent weeks to picking up the HD6XX, THX00, Fidelio L2, and SHP9500. Not sure why, because I love my X2s!

How about for somebody WITHOUT a separate amp/DAC? I own the X2s but am considering an "upgrade" to the HD650; however, I don't own an amp other than what's built into my HTC 10 or my HP laptop (with Beats software, for what that's worth).

I'd say this is 99.999% fake. Does the real Piston 3 even come in that many color choices?

I have the Piston 2s and have been using them with the HTC 10. Honestly, I can't tell much difference in sound quality after switching from HTC M8 to HTC 10; however, I notice a HUGE difference when using my Philips X2s. The extra juice in the 10s really helps power the bigger cans - but I...

Then sure, you'll dig the X2.  How do you like the HTC 10?  I have the M8 and am looking at that for an upgrade.  Does it need an amp?  I thought the 10 had the DAC/amp built in?

I think it's a pretty subjective thing you're asking. I think the X2 is great for the majority of genres. For EDM and stuff like Prodigy, the bass is plenty there, but some people might not like it as "airy" due to being open cans. If you want the music to rattle your skull, you'll be better off...

For those of you who have recently been discussing washing the pads, have you noticed any difference in the pads' itchiness after washing?

598s are definitely more comfortable than the X2s, but the sound (bass presence) of the Fidelio's is worth the extra weight on my neck, IMO. 

I've always wanted to hear a good, HQ binaural recording of an orchestra with the dummy's head placed where the conductor's would be.

Rage Against the Machine is great for testing out headphones and seems to be a good blend of many of the genres you like. Maybe also throw in some Michael Jackson, Dr Dre, and Fleetwood Mac for good measure.

Just discovered "Zimbabwe" by New Navy. Great test song for imaging and soundstage, sounds sublime on Fidelis X2s. (plus I'd love to revive this thread and get some new music recommendations)!
