  No, definitely not necessary.  The e-series Grados sound very good without a separate amp, IMO.

I love the 'Grado Sound'.  But I can understand how some might find aspects of their sound to be fatiguing, or even harsh for some music.  It seems that my 80e's really accentuate or inflate some sounds to the point of harshness.     An easy example that I can point to... listen to Eagles Hell...

It's difficult for me to recommend Xbox One when they don't even support FLAC.     I would love to be able to use Xbox One to play my music collection; however, it won't even recognize FLAC format.  Hello? Microsoft?  It's 2016, not 1996. 

  FWIW, I have my Xbox One connected to my Modi 2 Uber DAC via the Toslink optical output, and then to the Magni 2 Uber.   It works.  HOWEVER, stupid Xbox One doesn't support FLAC!!  So I can't listen to my music files, saved in FLAC format, if they are outputted through the Xbox One.  Argh!!!
