Completely new to headphones, need urgent advice on buying
It's tough due to your price range. Have you ever demoed the Bose Ae2's? That's about all I can come up with for your budget. I, personally, don't think they're that great but they would definitely be way better than Apple EarPods. And they are extremely lightweight and comfortable...- Planarman

Completely new to headphones, need urgent advice on buying
The only thing I can come up with close to your price range is the Audio Technica ath-m50x's. But they're a little over your budget. Good luck!- Planarman

What's the consensus on bose?
This is a great perspective to add balance to all the hate for Bose. Yes, Bose makes some crappy products and their headphones are overpriced for what you get, but not ALL of their products are worthy of so much hate. And although their headphones leave a lot to be desired for sound quality...- Planarman

What's the consensus on bose?
Colored means the sound they produce isn't natural or flat. In other words, instead of the music sounding the way the artist recorded it and wanted it to sound, Bose changes it to make it sound more exciting. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though, as some people prefer it. But audiophile...- Planarman

Looking for headphones
I'd reccomend the Psb m4u2's. They have a built-in amp that has three modes. Active noise-canceling, active (amped sound but noise-canceling off), and passive (everything off). You can get them for $250 on Amazon right now and they sound much better than Bose...- Planarman

What's the consensus on bose?
Depends on what product you're looking for. The Soundlink Mini is an excellent product. Their headphones are overpriced for what you get sound wise, but they're phenomenal in terms of comfort. For noise-canceling they're still at the top if not the best.- Planarman

Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions
Can I ask you a question? Are you saying that an upgraded cable, alone, can dramatically reduce microphonics? I always thought microphonics was the result of a tight seal that creates pressure. But if switching to an upgraded cable can reduce that then I need to get one. How expensive is the...- Planarman

Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions
I wish I liked their sound more. They're beautifully built, beautiful to look at, lightweight, and very comfortable. Those qualities are undeniable. I just prefer my headphones to lean a little more towards analytical.- Planarman

The Momentum's are good headphones but for that price range, the Psb m4u1's are even better. Have you thought about them? You can get them for $250 now from Amazon or Crutchfield. And unlike the Wirecutter, I'd pick them over the Oppo pm-3's...- Planarman

Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions
You're exactly right. I would like to say one more thing. The pm-3's treble was actually acceptable when I first got them. It wasn't until after burn in that the bass, which was already warm, became even more pronounced and the treble then sounded even more distant and rolled off. After that the...- Planarman

Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions
As someone who has owned both and been able to listen side by side, they do not sound the same. The Psb's are balanced while the pm-3's are warm. Also the Psb's soundstage is much larger but the pm-3's have the most accurate bass I've ever heard (it's too bad they don't have the treble to...- Planarman

Comparisons: 36 of the Top Closed/Portable Headphones Around
Well one thing we can agree on is that the Psb's are ugly, big, and bulky. The build of the Pm-3's combined with their weight, blows the Psb''s out of the water. But as an audiophile, all I care about is the sound. And for that, I'll happily wear them on a bus and look like a dork while drifting...- Planarman

Comparisons: 36 of the Top Closed/Portable Headphones Around
Yes all this is subjective. I do find the pm-3's bass very tight and accurate but that only works if you have a top end to match. I didn't say the bass was bad, it's just that it's emphasized too much and that makes the sound signature too unbalanced for me to call them neutral. I have some very...- Planarman

Interesting to hear you say that. They were not neutral enough for me. I found them to have too much treble roll off which made them sound too bass-heavy. And that took away too much clarity and detail. Other than that, though, they are good headphones.- Planarman

Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions
Have you looked in to the Psb m4u1's? In my opinion, they're way better balanced than the Nad's with much better clarity. In fact, I like them even more than the Pm3's. Look at my name, that should tell you a lot that I can say that. I actually sent my Pm-3's back after comparing them side by...- Planarman

PSB M4U1 - Thoughts?
As a former owner of Grado 325e's, here's what I can tell you. The m4u1's give you everything you wished the Grados did. They give you closed back for travel, and as ugly as they are, they're not as ugly as Grados. They give you the same treble clarity but without the extreme sibilance and they...- Planarman

PSB M4U1 - Thoughts?
Just for the record, compared to the Psb's, hp-50's clearly have MORE bass. I actually think they have a little too much and that takes away a little from the high end clarity. The m4u1's bass is tighter and doesn't detract from other frequencies. In fact, because of that, I've sold my Nad's and...- Planarman

PSB M4U1 - Thoughts?
They're a steal even at full price. If you can get them brand new and discounted, do it immediately! Haha. Also I don't think the superiority of planar technology trumps a well balanced headphone. Like I said, after spending extended time with the pm-3's, they just weren't worth the cost. The...- Planarman

PSB M4U1 - Thoughts?
Excellent points once again. I actually don't have any fitting problems with the Nad's, so I prefer them to the Psb's but by a very slim margin. They're both just so good. I actually left them both for the Oppo pm-3's but it was short lived. Over time, I realized that the pm-3's leave too much...- Planarman
