Can't speak for the 565 specifically, but with all my other sennheisers, only the original will do. For my 540 II, I tried 5 or 6 sets of pads altogether, and nothing comes close to the original velour pad, which is a pain, because the pads for those are long discontinued, and I spent a few...

So the pad burned just from trying to desolder the original wire from it? That's pretty disappointing. I guess you'd have to try again, with short little taps of the iron, to see whether that helps. It'd be a shame to write this mod off completely, as I can see it being beneficial soundwise...

Oh, can the brass plugs be removed from the housing then? I've never taken mine apart to check, but I'd have been interested in trying a direct wire job myself. So, was there just too much heat transfer, with the iron held in place for too long, or...?
