In case you decide to go with the repair/mod, I'd be very interested to hear about results since I'm pretty much in the same boat with this balance problem. I've been thinking about replacing the resistors, and then, it it doesn't help, trying the cable mod.

Well, I bought them from an ebay seller so I'm not sure about the warranty. But even assuming they are still covered by warranty, I'll have to send them to Sony Japan, somehow explain the issue to people who probably don't speak English and hope than they acknowledge the existence of the problem...

Just got his reply. Unfortunately, he cannot check the manufacturer as he doesn't own the headphones anymore. The point though was that the drivers are fully covered (with the exception of a small hole), which I believe answers the "what's blocking the outside of the drivers" question.
