JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege
Very nice, I think they only made 500 of this version so it's a nice collector item. After you've had some time listening, report back what you find of the special nozzle compared to the others. From what I read and based on the color, it is made of phosphor bronze as opposed to the brasse one...- jafnvaegi

JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege
Great price on the original FD01 (esp. if you'd like to experiment with the mods yourself vs waiting for the FX01) I paid a good bit more when I got mine last year :P While I could not reliably detect an audible difference from the nozzle material by itself, some may so this might be a better...- jafnvaegi

Also to note, this was for the pre-order and once production starts on them, they should be back at the $280 price as I understand.- jafnvaegi

JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege
@oneofthem You have an FW0x correct? I didn't notice this until now, but the Spiral Dot tips are slightly transparent dark grey correct? They may actually be a different material than the original EP-FX9 (or what was on the older woodies and what is on the FD02) which are solid black. I'd...- jafnvaegi

JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege
I'd be taken aback by this too haha. That makes sense, it sounds like that ring is just for tension and I'd guess doing that multiple times may make it looser over time. Good note on the micropore tape application and easy re-application as needed, I'll keep that in mind! That's correct, I...- jafnvaegi

JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege
I don't think so, they only mention that Spiral Dot was first introduced in 2014 with FX650/750/850 '3rd gen' woodies but mostly talk about the tech in the new ones. It seems like the silicone material didn't change until Dot+ but the shape may be very slightly different from the FW01/02/03...- jafnvaegi

JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege
I went on to do some more reading on older JVC models and it seems like there may have been 'silent revisions' over the years, regarding tips included with the IEMs. I read accounts of them being softer or just different feeling with the FX500/700, then with newer IEMs like FX650/750/850 they...- jafnvaegi

JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege
Great write-up, I've had similar impressions with the Symbio types (I've got quite the tip collection at this point haha) and find the JVC tips tend to be best with these overall...especially in terms of comfort, but also least compromise on the sound. The mods do a better job at tuning than...- jafnvaegi

JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege
The FD02 comes with the first generation Dot (EP-FX9 model) same as the FW01/02/03, not the Dot+ which only comes packaged with the FW10000 and FD01 as I understand. However, JVC just released for individual sale the Dot++ (EP-FX10 model) which is an improved version of the Dot+ and I suspect...- jafnvaegi

Washington, DC./Maryland/Virginia Head-Fi Member Meet - May 18, 2019 - Gaithersburg, MD
I should be able to make this one (finally...it's been too long!) as long as I'm all caught up on preparing for a house closing and move, which is a few weeks later. Due to the logistics of the move however, a fair bit of my stuff will likely be packed or in storage but I'll see what I can...- jafnvaegi

JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege
AFAIK JVC has not released the Spiral Dot+ for individually packaged sale. These new Spiral Dot++ (model EP-FX10 just released a week ago) are basically the 3rd generation of Spiral Dot tips that improve on the Dot+ in some ways but are mostly the same. Since Spiral Dot types are my personal...- jafnvaegi

DC Area Meet - August 18th, 2018
Unfortunately my schedule has changed around in a way that requires me to travel somewhere over night and I will be there the early part of Saturday. If I can make it, I will only be bringing my portable gear (no time to stop at home to get the desktop rig). That said, I would also have an...- jafnvaegi

DC Area Meet - August 18th, 2018
I can likely make this meet with a few others - I'll figure out what we can collectively expect to bring and report back  I'll for sure have my main stuff: Senn HD600 w/ some mods, DIY single-ended 2A3 tube amp, Timbre TT-1 DAC, JVC HA-FD01 w/ some mods, Hifiman RE600 w/ some mods...- jafnvaegi

DC Area Head-Fi Meet Planning (ongoing)
A weekend in mid-late August should work for me too, and/or Sept. should be fairly open. It's been a while since I've been out to one too, the weekend of CAF 2017 I was getting married and the last one earlier this year I was traveling (but saw the pics and it looked like a great turnout)...- jafnvaegi

Cowon Plenue P1
Edit: Anyone attempt to drive the Mee Pinnacle P1 with the Plenue 1? I see it's rated output is 2Vrms which *should* be enough power; with the Pinnacle this should mean 80mW, or 115dB at max volume so I know it'll go beyond normal listening levels. I mostly wanted to hear any real world...- jafnvaegi

DC-Area Head-Fi Meet - Saturday, February 27, 2016 -- Impressions Thread
It was great to meet you as well and I hope you can make it to the next meet! The P1 is a bit lacking in subbass extension and there's a little hump in the midbass as a result, so depending on the track that aspect can be more noticeable...overall it's still on the warmer side of neutral. I...- jafnvaegi

DC-Area Head-Fi Meet - Saturday, February 27, 2016 -- Impressions Thread
Thanks for the complements guys, she's a work in progress so next time around it may be even better! We shall see anyway I'll be making it compatible to use both 2A3 and 45 tubes as well as some other little things (mostly for fine tuning and convenience) and big changes (new chassis &...- jafnvaegi

DC-Area Head-Fi Meet - Saturday, February 27, 2016, 12:00 Noon-4:00 PM, George Mason Regional Library
VT-116A / 6SJ7 much like the original (though I believe the original used the predecessor 6C6 technically). It's always had a bit of hum, so refining the PSU and some other components, new wiring layout should help with that a bit. I will be putting the PSU in a separate chassis. It's been an...- jafnvaegi

DC-Area Head-Fi Meet - Saturday, February 27, 2016, 12:00 Noon-4:00 PM, George Mason Regional Library
I'll be coming along with Tjj226_Angel and bringing some IEMs (MeeAudio Pinnacle P1, recabled Hifiman RE600, Zero Audio Tenore), a Rockbox'd DX50 and a modified HD600. If I have time to put it back together, I'll bring a modified CAL! as well. I may be able to bring my full desktop rig, a DIY...- jafnvaegi

Hifiman IEM's: RE-400 and RE-600
Thanks! I don't think it looks so bad, I also considered doing an ear hook originally but I do tend to wear them down from time to time. Mostly when sitting at a desk at work and I have to pop them in and out. Your cable looks quite durable and I do like the Neutrik connector, I have used...- jafnvaegi

Hifiman IEM's: RE-400 and RE-600
Yup, you should only need an xacto knife with a new/clean blade to get the RE400/600 shell open along the seam. On my first pair of RE400 I did use a tiny heat gun to carefully heat the back of the shell to soften the glue, but with my second pair I just used the knife and went around a few...- jafnvaegi
