Some vintage cd-players won't even read all cd-r's. You'll have to try. You will probably have better chance of working with smaller capacity cdrw (700mb and less)

About the new type... I think its great because they were using that kind of type in 19 century for wooden engraving (it was optimised for wood) and I thing that is good modern interpretation od that slab serif type. I think it gives you retro look more than previous garamond-style type...
