Yeah, the law of diminishing returns also keeps me from going full retard or listening to such (general consensus) advice at the high-end of the spectrum... Balance is usually struck somewhere in between the extremes. I'm definitely enjoying the music section of this site though...- dendrite

They each provide a unique experience. However, one will never be the other. Speakers win out on sound stage. Headphones will never produce low frequency sound waves that impact your whole body. Headphones win out on putting detail closer for perceiving and as a result sacrifice sound stage...- dendrite
