Massdrop is dropping the new HE4XX in collaboration with HiFiMAN tomorrow at US$169. The exact driver it will incorporate is unknown and neither HiFiMAN nor Massdrop are willing to disclose this information. But it is likely the HE400i, given that the given impedance and sensitivity match...

This reminds me a lot of the tape mod on the IE80, although I don't feel the need to use this on the Exclusive 5; its bass boost doesn't extend as far into the mids as the IE80s does.

Perhaps an airline attenuator might solve your issues?

In PowerAmp go to Settings > Audio > Advanced Tweaks >  Volume Levels (Experimental) and set it to 76.

According to some it is due to the headphone drivers breaking in. My personal take on this case is not the drivers that break in, but the earpads of your new AD900x. Try pushing the headphone towards your ears in order to emulate more worn earpads. I think you'll find the bass will increase...

Saw a guy in the supermarket a couple of days ago with recabled Sennheiser HD-25-1 II - which I thought had a right-side cable entry into the headphones, so either this person was wearing them backwards or I am plain wrong.

Yesterday on the train I saw a guy with Sennheiser IE80s with a non-stock cable. It appeared to be a braided red cable, but I couldn't see from up close. First IE80 I've seen in the wild other than my own!

It was in the Netherlands between Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Yesterday I saw a guy on the train with DT990s connected to a Macbook.

The IM02 is said to be fairly neutral sounding. If you're looking for the bassier IEMs in the ATH-IMxx line-up I would take a look at the IM70 or IM50, they're bass and mid-centric - but if you need more treble you can take the filters out. They're way below your budgetary requirements though...

    Whatever bass boost feature/EQ you end up using, the MA900 will never do well in the lower bass regions. For gaming I use an E17k with the bass boost to +10 and it sounds quite nice, not so much for music listening - where the lack of sub-bass is really noticeable and a mid-bass hump is...

Comfort is highly subjective. Though, if you don't mind open-back headphones (definitely not noise cancelling!), the Sony MDR MA900 springs to mind.

Thanks for the update! I agree with your reasoning. It's better to ship high quality producst than to rush and ship sub-par products. Even if this means the backers have to wait a little while longer.
