For the tone controls, both bass and treble are set about halfway. It just never seems right without it that way.

  If I jack it up then I hear what you mean, but if I cut the 8k then it makes vocals sound more distant. But I'd also point out that the 8k isn't really being boosted; it just looks that way because of the 4k and 16k.

Yep, like I said, I'm the knid of person who expects to use the same headphones for 15 years, so I represent the layman around here.

Wow. Not enough is being said about the isolation in these things.   I have them turned up full volume, which is intolerably loud for listening for more than a few seconds. If I cover the tips with my thumbs, I can't begin to hear any sound until they're about 6 inches from my ears. Never...

I'll see if I can get some screen captures later.   Anyway, the more I listen to them, the more vast the difference is becoming. It's interesting how they started out sounding like a 10-20% downgrade from the EX70s, then they were a 5% upgrade, then 10%, and now they sound like a 30% upgrade...

H20, not sure where that comment came from. I thought axw meant "neutrality" in terms of EQ, but maybe he was referring to opinion bias. Still, his comment was so short and vague that I don't know how you possibly read as much into the comment as you did.
