Still using mine since 2013. Mainly use mine for mowing the grass/plowing the snow. Mine has the original battery, good for at least 2-3 uses (2-3 hours per use.).

Sounds like the database files may be corrupted.  Try deleting them and doing a database update.

Who says it's powered up when nothing is plugged into the HO?  You know that relay click you hear when you plug/unplug?  How else would the device know if the amp should be powered?  Besides, with nothing plugged into the amp the output power is zero.
