    Holo Audio Spring R2R DAC

Yea, that's a really nice breakdown. My May KTE supposedly has the enhanced USB module but I've no idea what that really entailed previously. And it doesn't impact me either way, so no need to wonder further. Thank you.

An exploration of Chord DAVE, MScaler, Qutest, and Holo May, HQPlayer

Not sure how helpful I can be since I'm a speaker listener, not headphones, but I do use HQP and a Holo May KTE, and came from a DF Venus II. As well, I just tried a Zen DAC V2 Sig as a comparison to May KTE... Yea, I know. It was never about thinking they'd be similar. But I was curious what...

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

I cannot believe how fast this thread moves. I logged in last night - 150+ new posts. Tonight, after having read ever.single.new.reply, I see there are 50 new posts. This thread is a full time job. Thanks, guys.   Oh and BTW I still love my ember + loki + 650 setup!

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

I went from an Bravo V2 to the Ember II. Suffice it to say, you will get sound from the Bravo V2 and Senn 650s but do NOT judge the 650s on the Bravo amp. Compared to the Ember, they will sound thin and ultimately unimpressive. But, you'll be able to see the potential in these cans, you just...

    Zorro the 120 ohm output?

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

So I'm only a couple days in and my "lack of bass" observations are wearing off. They seem to present bass as it was meant - full on some songs and light on others. I hear this same thing in my room at home with a 12" sub for each channel. Some songs which thump my chest relentlessly upstairs...

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

When I first unboxed the Ember, I thought H/M/L was referring to the actual impedance on the headphones, so with a 300 ohm can, I should be using "high." I didn't realize that was referring to the relative output impedance and, after reading up on output impedances I can see why the low setting...

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Hey man, it's selectable per the site:   Output Resistance: Selectable 0.1, 35 or 120Ohm That's what we're referring to when we're saying "low, medium, high," it's selectable on each side of the amp per channel though I'd imagine this should always be equal on both channels.

Yea, it's different, but not nearly as sensitive as the Bravo, which I've read has far more gain built-in. Once I take the top back off again I'll switch it back to w/AM.    I'll have to play around with the impedance settings to see what I like best.   Thanks for the tips, very much...

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Listening to my 650's on the Ember II that arrived a day early. I have a Sylvania 6SN7 tube in it and to me, the difference in sound comes down to one simple word: character. The sound just has more life and "bounce" to it through the Ember. I have it set to the "High" impedance mode, input caps...

I will not be so bold as to say that I haven't wanted to rip the radio out of my car after turning on the Pop station and I get to hear the same 4-word chorus repeated against a drab melody, on and on and on. But like I said, those aren't the songs to judge music by.   BTW, I've had Sea Change...

Well you were a big help, and I appreciate it. I'm actually looking to put tubes in my home setup, but that'll have to wait since I'm building out the headphone rig now.   I completely agree with you that today's music is fine for the most part - I'm sure there were a ton of "duds" back in the...

Anything MFSL is going to be good, IMO. As the Yggy has shown, even Redbook can be out of this world, or so I've heard. While I will say I have a certain affinity for many of the albums released in 1973, our options for playback these days absolutely dwarf what was available back then. It truly...

Want new work cans - upgrading from SR80i, rock/metal but my tastes are all over the board

Thought I should update this since I've made two moves since my last post, unfortunately neither set are closed headphones. I picked up a good set of HD650's on the forums here for a good price. Turns out my neighbors at work think they leak less sound ("we can't even hear them") compared to my...

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Relax man, "I'm picking up what you're putting down" is just a colloquialism, kind of a play on words I suppose, to suggest "I get what you're saying" or in my case "maybe I don't get what you're saying." I didn't mean to infer you were putting anything down. Although, your words were clear...

David, good call, and I should have clarified. While most of my listening is to Spotify Radio/cherry-picked songs from Spotify, I do use JRiver > DSD > WASAPI > Loki > headphone amp and I have about 30G of high-rez FLAC and 24/96 material to go through at work.   The Senn 650's maiden voyage...

I'm picking up the HE400's for around $200 so I figure why not, if I do find them lacking in comparison, I'll just re-sell or use them at home, where I generally don't use headphones but would if I had a good set hanging around. I listen to cans a lot at work so I want my best set here...

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Received my new-to-me set of 650's today and so far, I can barely take them off :) I'm using them in favor of Grado SR80i's, using (for now) a Bravo V2 amp. It actually doesn't do *too* bad but then I don't have my Ember II to compare it to. I will have the Ember on Friday.   So far, if Senn...

    Project Ember Review

Jeremy got back to me today, amazing service to be following up with emails on a Sunday, IMO. I do the same for work but don't expect that whatsoever. Anyway, unfortunately he doesn't have any more Sylvania chrome tops. Any other info on that particular tube to see if they exist anywhere else...

    Project Ember Review

They also state the supercharger will heat up stock tubes more quickly as well so there is a benefit either way. Whether or not that's worth $40+ is up to the consumer. For me, personally, it's worth it (albeit included on the model I bought) in a "just in case" scenario. If I'm contemplating...

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

I have 650's on the way from the For Sale forum here, can't wait! Just today I ponied up for an Ember with the 6sn7 adapter, as I don't think my Bravo V2 is going to do right by 300-ohm cans. The Ember should scale well with my current Grados and my future HE400's from a buddy. Excited to try...

    Project Ember Review

Great advice, I will do as you suggest, go for the 6sn7 and ask about the Sylvania tubes you mentioned. I don't see anything with Sylvania and chrome in the description on the PDF on his site, but I'll send an email over and go that route.    So yea, Ember inbound :)
