    Schiit Mjolnir headphone amplifier

I had the same thought a couple of minutes after posting here.   You won't be surprised to know that they replied very quickly, quoting EIA Standard RS-297-A :)   From their reply: "Pin2 Positive polarity terminal for balanced audio circuits (aka "hot")"   Which makes me sort of wonder...

    Schiit Mjolnir headphone amplifier

Quick question (hopefully...)   Difficulty: I know nothing about balanced/XLR connectivity   I've got a TEAC UD-501 DAC which has balanced outputs. I can set the polarity of the output connectors so that either 2 or 3 is hot.   To safely connect the TEAC to the Mjolnir, which setting...

Bug head emperor player - audiophile player from Japan

This looks really interesting. Thanks for posting about it.   There's almost too much to play around with :) But at least it looks like you can't break anything - closing down and restarting seems to reset everything to 'default'?   Does it matter which version I use - 32-bit or 64-bit? Or...

Teac Reference Line UD-501 USB DAC "DSD"

OK. This is one of those very esoteric technical questions...   I'm using JRiver MC19 to send my 16/44.1 PCM FLACs to the UD-501 using MC19's 2XDSD native option.   I think that it sounds better using than plain old PCM.   With my (very noisy) i7 PC, I can use the minimum buffering option...

Teac Reference Line UD-501 USB DAC "DSD"

I've barely used the headamp on the '501s - a pair of Apple Earpods are the only things I've listened to through it...   I think I'm a bit scared to use it in case I can't hear a difference compared to the 'proper' headamps I've got :)   OK. I've bitten the bullet and done some massively...

Teac Reference Line UD-501 USB DAC "DSD"

Not heard the Schiit, but I have owned and heard the UD-501 and the Director. I've kept the UD-501 :) (I've also got a couple of AudioQuest Dragonflies - 1.1 and 1.2)   In the UK the Director is considerably cheaper than the UD-501 - even if you buy from thomann.de, the TEAC is still a good...

REVIEW - Yulong Audio Sabre DA8 Reference DAC

Interesting. They state that it takes 15 days for them to send the DA8 out as they don't have them in stock. So I wonder where they're getting them from? PC HiFi Shop? ebay?   I'd feel a lot more comfortable if I could buy direct from Yulong. Or if there was an equivalent to Grant Fidelity...

REVIEW - Yulong Audio Sabre DA8 Reference DAC

Apologies if this is the wrong place for this post...   I'm in the UK and am looking to buy a DA8.   The 'official' European stockist appears to be http://www.pc-hifi-shop.com/ with the DA8 coming in at 980GBP (ish).   But, there are a number of ebay sellers (in Hong Kong and China) who...

    Forza AudioWorks Impressions Thread

CIA Logistics. When you absolutely, positively can't wait for your hi-fi bling to be with you.   (Any feelings of disorientation, apparent strange behaviour by your computers/tablets/phones, and you noticing unmarked vans close (but not too close) to your home, are due entirely to the sheer...

    Forza AudioWorks Impressions Thread

Woohoo. Cables arrived today (despite the online track & trace telling me that they are somewhere called Langley - hang on, isn't that headquarters of the CIA? Something you're not telling us FAW??? :) ).   Noir HPC Mk2.   Man alive, they are *lovely*. And the Furutech jackplug is probably...

    Forza AudioWorks Impressions Thread

According to the Poczta Polska website, my cables are still sitting in Wroclaw. ::drums fingers on table in frustration:: ;)   According to Google maps, the post office where they are sitting is in what looks like a very nice part of the city. Why do all cities in mittel-Europa look so much...

    Forza AudioWorks Impressions Thread

FWIW, I placed my order for a set of Noir headphone cables on 6th January. I also got the upgrade email (on the 8th) and paid for it (think mine was 29Eur). I've sent FAW a few emails since asking, amongst other things, about dispatch dates (I too was slightly worried as this was my first...

HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

I can also add an anecdata point to that. "Iffy bass and sharp highs" is a spot on description of how I found my HE-500s through my O2 (my other phones all sound pretty good through it though). I found the Asgard 1 could handle the 500s a bit better and the Lake People G109S can handle them a...

    Do you have tinnitus?

That pretty much sums up my tinnitus. Late at night, if I'm struggling to get to sleep, I can hear it (but it's never stopped me from falling asleep). If I actively focus on it, I can hear it.   I think I acquired it from a combination of listening to headphones at way too high a volume and...

HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

I'm thinking I shouldn't have left the LCD-X thread ;)   Or I should be in the Beyerdynamic T1 thread. Or I should have stuck with my HD600s and never come back to head-fi at all :)   "A fool and his money are soon parted" - that's me since I got back into head-fi, that is. And it really...

HD600 too dull, HE-500 too shrill. Is there a sweet spot?

I own both these phones. I really like the HD600s, but there are aspects of the HE-500 sound that I also really, really like.   The 600s sound a bit too dull/veiled and lacking in bass 'quality', but they are very easy to listen to.   The 500s have a bass sound that I really love, but their...

HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

Ah, you're going through exactly the process I went through just a couple of weeks ago :)   You mentioned in another post that you're using a JDS O2? That was one of the first amps I tried and I heard exactly what you're hearing (you can read my OMGWTF meltdown post somewhere in this...

Why the cable myth won't go away

Despite the fact that I *know* that there's no limit to what people will spend/buy on 'audiophile' hi-fi, I'm calling shenanigans on this one...   1. That looks like a really poorly photoshopped picture of David Beckham   2. "Roskhilde Audio" only seems to come up on Google linked to this...

HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

Thanks very much for your comments everyone. They were much more helpful and positive than the whining in my OP deserved.   Now for the mea culpa. 300-odd quids-worth of German engineering (Lake People G109S) arrived yesterday and it's made quite a difference to the sound. The bass is now much...

    Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

Sorry for necro-ing my own post, but my 600s came back from Senn UK yesterday. £54 very well spent :)   New earpads and headband pad (the 650 one, interestingly). And two new drivers. The service note they sent out is a bit lacking in detail - all it says is "audio level problem...

HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

I wish there was someone local who could listen to them and give me a second opinion, but sadly, there isn't anyone like that. All I have to go on is my own flawed, subjective opinion.   'Bass head'? Not sure - based on my reaction to the '500s compared to (my understanding of) the...

HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

Yeah. That's pretty much the decision I've already made. If I wait for the G109-S, which should, by all accounts drive them with room to spare and therefore not 'compromise' their sound quality, I'll probably miss the window for returning them to the retailer.   Decisions, decisions... :(

HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

tl:dr I can't handle the apparent lack of bass and piercing treble of my new HE-500s. What do I replace them with, or should everyone just point and laugh at me because of what I'm driving them with, or are my pair 'broken'?   For Christmas I thought I'd treat myself to a set of expensive-ish...

    The iBasso DX50 Thread - Latest firmware: 1.9.5 - June 30, 2016

I'm just about to install 1.2.7, having had no problems with any of the previous FW I've installed (golden DX50 and cloth/tin/wooden ears FTW...).   One really stupid question I have is, is there any way of displaying the number of the track I'm playing? It's more of a belt and braces thing...

    The iBasso DX50 Thread - Latest firmware: 1.9.5 - June 30, 2016

Heh. I use that as one of my desktop PC wallpapers :)   I'm pretty sure the original DX50 wallpaper was more metallic, but that wood effect would work pretty good, I think.   Just need a good way of converting 1280x960 to 320x240. Is there a FLAC-equivalent for .png? :)
