Mid-fi cans well suited for classical music and good mids/trebel (HE-400i versus Oppo PM-3)

Everything I read said the he400i was a very different headphone from the he500. The main cons listed by reviewers were small sound stage and the lack of defined base comapred with the he-400.    The first problem is one that I don't really mind, given that the sound quality in general is...

Mid-fi cans well suited for classical music and good mids/trebel (HE-400i versus Oppo PM-3)

Here in the States, amazon has them for 286 list price which turns in to $309 after tax. If they hadn't been available for that price, I would definitely have jumped up to the he-400i.

Mid-fi cans well suited for classical music and good mids/trebel (HE-400i versus Oppo PM-3)

Per the last post, I just received my Beyerdynamic DT880 Premium 250 Ohm headphones.   I won't take a strong stance on these headphones until they are past burn-in a couple hundred hours down the line.   At present, through my amp (Maverick TubeMagic D1 with upgraded opamps and tubes), they...

Mid-fi cans well suited for classical music and good mids/trebel (HE-400i versus Oppo PM-3)

Price (including amp tuning) is mainly what decided me between the Beyer and the AKG, I went with the DT880 Premium 250 ohm (I know the curly cable would drive me insane). Less money now means more money for better amp/dac later.    We'll see how the phones perform during burn-in.   Thanks...

Mid-fi cans well suited for classical music and good mids/trebel (HE-400i versus Oppo PM-3)

Are no classical fans digging the he-400i? The sound stage is limited, but the signature is supposed to be really precise and clean up into trebel.

Mid-fi cans well suited for classical music and good mids/trebel (HE-400i versus Oppo PM-3)

I find it interesting how similar the frequency response is between the DT880 and the AKG, Doesn't say anything about how amp and DAC will affect things, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Mid-fi cans well suited for classical music and good mids/trebel (HE-400i versus Oppo PM-3)

I am extremely curious how those would sound on my system, and what I could coax out of them with some upgrades, but I'm not sure I want to deal with the heartache of finding that sweet spot.

Mid-fi cans well suited for classical music and good mids/trebel (HE-400i versus Oppo PM-3)

Which 880s do you suggest, 32, 250, or 600 ohm? They seem to differ significantly.

Mid-fi cans well suited for classical music and good mids/trebel (HE-400i versus Oppo PM-3)

Looking for a set that is portable, does a great job with classical music and guitar, and has mid/trebel focus with base definition, but not so much oomf. Good sound stage would be nice, but probably hard to find in my price range.   I really like the Grado sound, but they leave something to...

DAC/Amp combination and Powered Speakers for <600

I need to correct myself, apparently the hum is actually at 80hz, hard to hear the difference. It's not a constant "hum" it's a sound that occurs only when the low frequency components of a song are particularly loud (occurs/gets louder with the intensity of the bass line). Apparently it's a...

DAC/Amp combination and Powered Speakers for <600

I received the Airmotive 4 pair from Emotiva this last Friday. I am extremely impressed, they are more than powerful enough for everything I will want to do, and provide pretty great sound.   The highs are crisp and perfect, easily equivalent to a much more expensive speaker. Even if I upgrade...

How To: record/encode the highest quality digital audio from pristine tape and vinyl source

Thanks for the advice, leads into the question:   Does the E-MU 0404 fit the bill?   Are the ADCs listed in this thread overkill?:  ...

How To: record/encode the highest quality digital audio from pristine tape and vinyl source

His system is a bit daunting...speakers from Quad, 5000$ mysterious super DAC, Revox to handle the tape, a tonearm he built and patented himself on what I presume is a great turn table to handle the vinyl, etc...I can't recite the manufacturers other than Quad and Revox off the top of my head...

How To: record/encode the highest quality digital audio from pristine tape and vinyl source

I happen to have access to a friend's extensive collection of audiophile quality 7.5in/sec tape, 15 in/sec tape, white lable vinyl, etc... He has given me an open invitation to convert some of his collection to a high resolution digital format that could properly reproduce the sound quality...

DAC/Amp combination and Powered Speakers for <600

I found one surprisingly thorough review of the 4:   http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/speaker-subwoofer-reviews/print-63213-emotiva-pro-airmotiv-4-powered-studio-monitor-review.html   (think its time to order them)     Thanks again for the great advice, it sounds like getting...

DAC/Amp combination and Powered Speakers for <600

I decided to get the Tubemagic D1 from Maveric with their upgraded tube and opamps (I wanted to get the DAC squared away before worrying about speakers)   These Grados sound great being fed by this thing, so I feel comfortable moving forward to speakers. I like the Airmotive 4 a lot, and...

DAC/Amp combination and Powered Speakers for <600

Hi all,   I am new to good audio, I have a set of low end Grado's, and a pretty mediocre sound card and that's about it.   A new Co-worker of mine maintains a Hi-fi from Quad and an extensive library of 15in/sec. tape that combine to melt my soul. I cannot hope to get close to that, but...
