Non-audiophile reactions to high-end headphones Part II

The logical response to someone who's got headphone sticker shock is "How much do you spend/have you spent on your music?" If a pair of $100/$200/$500 headphones allows you to appreciate--and enjoy--the $2000 worth of music on your iPod (200 albums at $10 per) then they're a bargain.

    Grado GS1000i for $425?

Are you sure this isn't a scam? The price is right on the border of "too good to be true" given that the 1000is retail for $1,000.  Even if they're broken, at that price you could have them serviced, and still sell them in the classifieds here at a modest profit.

    Grado PS500s (new Grado's)

Quote:     The PS500s are very versatile beasts, IMHO. My playlist runs the gamut--Nirvana to Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald to Cowboy Junkies, Yo Yo Ma to Yo La Tengo.  Do these phones let you get experienced with Hendrix? Of course.  But on a high res of Goat Rodeo Sessions, you can also...

    Grado PS500s (new Grado's)

Quote:   I find it kind of amusing/amazing that we're calling a $600 Grado a "lower cost phone." My first set of "high-end" speakers cost less than the Grados, and in the real world, people buy a 50-inch television for that kind of money.  On a positive note, the Grados will outlast the...

RS1i vs. PS500 vs. MS Pro

Quote:     Yes, that's what I'm saying. Or more accurately, that I liked them both, but I liked the PS500s better, and I thought they were a tad more forgiving on bad recordings while still sounding superb on great ones like the great Latin Playboys cut I'm listening to right now. ...

    post your grado mods....

Quote:     Nice job, but I can't believe you're still using those metal gimbals. The plastic gimbals--it's really more of an advanced  composite, actually--sound so much better because they allow more free resonance of the driver and eliminate that nasty 2.31db hump at 185Hz that the...

Quote:     Thanks for the tip. I've already enquired about color options. I'm considering a two-tone vintage red/vintage brown or some variation on that.   Do you have a pic of yours?  Were you happy with the leather quality and the general comfort? (I guess so given your...

    [CLOSED] (HD800 vs LCD-2 vs PS1000 vs HE-6) + Colorfly C4 Pro

Another vote for the PS1000s, although I admit I haven't heard the HD800s.  A local dealer has a pair of 1000s and I love 'em.  Plenty of detail, but in a relaxed, organic presentation. They're really musical and very easy to drive, even with an Iphone.  I'm listening to a pair of PS-500s...

RS1i vs. PS500 vs. MS Pro

I had the RS1s and the PS500s in house for a week recently. I think you'd probably prefer the PS-500s. They both have that magical Grado midrange, but the PS 500s are a tad more efficient, have a somewhat smoother treble, and significantly more low bass content.  There's substantially more...

Main unamped 'phone for a variety: Beyer DT 880, Grado 225, Grado 325, HiFiMan HE-400, or other?

First off, my wife is a high school science teacher, and even when I'm doing 16 hours a day 7 days a week finishing a book, she always works harder than me. So you deserve something good.    1) A general point, first off. I've got set of Grados I bought in 1995. If they were a human being...

    $15 to $75

My experience.  After I lost my Etymotics a couple years ago, I used generic IEMs for a while. $15-$25 models I'd get at Target, etc.  Heading out on a trip, I splurged on Etymotic MC-5s for $55.  Huge, huge upgrade. Much better resolution, more detail, much better bass (which is not an...

New here on High-end audio forum.

I'd suggest paying more attention to the source gear.  The Bifrost DAC is a big step up from the Modi, which is very much built to a price point (but is great at what it does.)   If I were buying Schiit, I would go with the Uber-mod BiFrost instead of a Modi. I use the BiFrost in a $10K+...

    Low-Price Audiophile Headphones

Quote:   Something like the Grado SR60is can be a lifetime investment. Literally.  I've got two pair of full-size phones right now. Grado SR-125s which are 20 years old.  And Yamaha YH-1s which are over 30 years old.  The plastic parts on the Yamahas are a little fragile but they...

The pain of walking into a hifi store...

The PS500s are really great. They've got the midrange resolving power and "magic" of the RSIs with more slam and extension and somewhat smoother highs (although the difference on the pairs I've got is rather minor and may be more a function of how the more extended bass affects the *perception*...

What is the best/hottest deal you ever got on headphones?

Quote:   Oh, no! I wish you'd told me before I traded them! Do you think he'll trade back?  But seriously, I would call this a troll so much as, well, a little bit of tongue-in-cheek humor in the spirit of other posts I've read on the site. Most of the other posters figured out that I...

What is the best/hottest deal you ever got on headphones?

I got a pair of old Grado Headphones at a yard sale a couple weeks ago for $25. Guy wanted $30 but I bargained them down. They seem to be a discontinued model.  I think the model number is HP-1. They're mostly all shiny metal, stainless steel or aluminum or something. They sound pretty good...

    Is Grado evolving too slowly?

The cool thing about Grados is that they work fine without much help from an amp in most circumstances.  I'm using the Audioquest Dragonfly direct from a Macbook Pro driving PS500s and it sounds pretty great.  That said, they still sound fine straight out of the headphone output, or even an...

    Is Grado evolving too slowly?

Quote:   It warms my cockles when a consumer spends a little money on a nice set of headphones, even if they're mostly concerned about the celebrity endorsement and/or the cheesy paint job.  Everyone's gotta start somewhere, and someone who buys a pair of Beats or whatever, has already...
