Audio Technica ATH-ON3 [Pictorial + Impression]

These are certainly the crazy bargain for the equivalent of US$8.3 in Japan! I got my brown ones for US$33.28 shipped from Bluetin. IMO the ATH-ON3 has a lot in common sonically with the ATH-EW9 woodie clip-ons. I'd disagree with ClieOS only in that the ON3 provides little isolation on my ears.

    MS-1 versus ATH-AD700

It isn't easy to define the ideal frequency response for headphones, but it's not flat. These old articles from HeadWize may provide some insight: Judging Headphones for Accuracy Taking Sound in Another Direction

    MS-1 versus ATH-AD700

A flat signal produced by a loudspeaker interacts with the human head, so the signal is no longer flat by the time it arrives at the eardrum. Some of these interactions are lost when one listens through headphones and must be built into the frequency response of the headphones. The frequency...

I'd suggest the i.Tech Clip R35 A2DP stereo bluetooth headset. He can use any headphones he wants with it but would also need a bluetooth dongle for the TV.

    Do you equalize?

Because unlike with speakers, there's no consensus as to the ideal frequency response for a headphone, and different manufacturers design to different goals, equalization of headphones has the potential to provide substantial sonic benefits, which, however, may be difficult to achieve.
