    SONY NW-ZX2

Absolutely. I would like to add that you can save a lot of money by purchasing a cheaper player with digital output (such as ZX1, A-series, F-series Walkman) and using them as a transport with an external DAC/Amp. If you can cope with the extra bulk, it's certainly possible to achieve similar...

    SONY NW-ZX2

Thanks for your input.   1. I just found it odd that the default music app read the files flawlessly when I demoed the unit and now that I have my own, it doesn't. I used a tagger program (Tag & Rename, MP3Tag doesn't do AIFFs apparently) to resave the tag information on the files on...

    SONY NW-ZX2

Hi All,   I just received my ZX2 today, but am having a few issues and was wondering if anyone would be able to enlighten me. First thing I did after turning the unit on was to update the system software (bad move?), then loaded on some music. It was at this point I realised:   1. My unit...

EarSonics Velvet universal custom in ear monitor with three sound tuning options

I have auditioned the Velvet/Litz combo and concur with this.   I found the bass to be tighter and more controlled than the stock cable, with improved imaging and slightly wider sound stage.

    SONY NW-ZX2

You want something like the Fiio L5 LOD cable. I believe companies like Bispa also make similar cables and you can also buy the spare parts if you want to try making it yourself.

    SONY NW-ZX2

I was under the impression that the ZX2 (and other Walkman products) did have line out capability, but you need to purchase/make a WM-port to 3.5mm cable in order to use it.

    SONY NW-ZX2

I believe this warning has to do with Japanese regulations for wifi devices and other equipment that emits a radio signal. Products sold in Japan are supposedly tuned such that they will not use frequencies reserved for other types of signals (radio broadcasts, emergency communications etc)...

Review by 'fonzler' on item 'VentureCraft SounDroid Vantam'

VentureCraft are a Japanese company well known for their portable headphone amplifiers and amp/DAC combo units. Today, I will be taking a look at their latest offering in this category: the feature-packed SounDroid Vantam. On paper, it may just be the audiophile’s ultimate portable companion...

EarSonics Velvet universal custom in ear monitor with three sound tuning options

From the photo, it looks like the tuning dials on the Crystal Edition are made of metal, which is a good sign. Did anyone else have a problem with the grooves on soft plastic dials on the original wearing away over time?   Also, it looks like it is open for pre-order from Musica Acoustics...

Review by 'fonzler' on item 'EarSonics Velvet'

IEMs with tuneable sound seem to be getting more popular nowadays with offerings from brands like JH Audio, AAW and Vision Ears. The downside, however, is that most of these offerings are custom IEMs, adding the inconvenience of impressions and lead time to the equation.  It certainly doesn’t...

    Cowon Plenue P1

I should give the caveat that the first time I heard the AK240 was on the weekend and it had the shortest audition time out of the three due to the huge line at the Astell & Kern booth, so please take my impressions with a grain of salt.     At the same time, I think it's also possible...

    Cowon Plenue P1

Thanks for the info, Wayneshrine. Please keep us updated on how you go with the P1. I am quite keen on making it my next portable player (based on my brief audition) in the absence of anything new in the same rough price range.

    Cowon Plenue P1

Straight out of the box, I would say the AK240 is the most detailed and spacious sounding. As many people have mentioned, the Calyx M is quite warm sounding, but at the same time is also provides plenty of detail and great instrument separation - so much so that I really didn't mind the warmth...

    Cowon Plenue P1

I tried both the Plenue 1 and Calyx M at the e-earphone Portable Audio Festival in Tokyo over the weekend and was able to speak to respective company representatives and also current owners of both units.   Calyx owners complained of slow operation and short battery life amongst other bugs...

Review by 'fonzler' on item 'Fischer Audio Consonance V2'

The Consonance V2 is a pair of earphones manufactured by Russia-based Fischer Audio which forms part of their Fundamentals lineup. With its in-line microphone and remote control unit and low impedance, it appears to be aimed squarely at smartphone users. As you can tell from the name, the V2 is...

Review by 'fonzler' on item 'Hidizs AP100 Portable HiFi Audio Player'

The AP100 DAP (Digital Audio Player) is the initial offering from Chinese new-kid-on-the-block, Hidizs (which I have no idea how to pronounce), officially released at CES in January of this year. It claims to be a ‘high fidelity audio player’ which are big words at the modest price of around...

Review by 'fonzler' on item 'Ortofon e-Q8 in-ear earphones'

Released earlier this year, the e-Q8s are a pair of single balanced armature (BA) driver earphones which are the new flagship to Ortofon’s long stagnant IEM lineup. I purchased mine not too long after their release in April 2014 for 36930 yen (approx. USD 350) and so at the time of writing have...

Review by 'fonzler' on item 'Ortofon MHd-Q7'

Package and Contents         The MHd-Q7 comes in a plain cardboard box with closed-cell foam packing. Contents are minimal: you get the amp itself and nondescript 3.5mm interconnect and USB charging cables. Fair enough.   Design   Ortofon really knows how to make a good looking product...

Unique Melody Miracle Review & Impressions Thread

Hi all,   I am a long time reader of this thread, first time poster. Just wanted to say that my Miracles arrived last week after a wait of 7 weeks, which all in all, I don't think is too bad.   Happy to report that there were no issues with fit, which I was afraid of in the ordering...
