Speaker stands... Non-sense or science?
I agree with the height and angles, but mass loading the stand is also fairly important IME. I have had a couple pairs of stands for bookshelves, and the bass response pre and post mass-loading is fairly significant. You get more frequency extension and control with mass loading.- Neuromance

320 kbps MP3 vs. normal audio CD listening Sound quality
cdvsmp3, So I took your survey. One, it's a bummer that you don't actually get the results immediately :) Also, I know you need x amount of data points to be statistically significant, but 16 different combinations is VERY time consuming. Maybe you could have an option to trim it to 8 or...- Neuromance

FLAC to ALAC? On a Mac.
In addition to the great suggestions for XLD, you can use Max, which is also free (well, shareware actually). www.sbooth.org/Max- Neuromance

Where to sell vacuum tubes
Others may disagree, but if you are trying to sell them in one go, I would suggest trying to sell them to some retailer that specializes in selling tubes. It's unlikely any individual would need all the tubes you have. No relation to any of these, but a couple retailers that come to mind are...- Neuromance

Small home office budget 2.0/2.1 hif/lifestyle system
Emphasis on "lifestyle" but I just bought a Wadia 151 from Music Direct. These used to retail for $1200 but they are on close out for $500. It's a combined DAC and ICE chip amp. Benefit is that it is one unit with a small footprint. However, one big con is that there are no analog in...- Neuromance

Record Players
Wasn't clear from the above posts what you already have, but you would need to have the following audio chain: Turntable->phono stage-> some amplifier (that you already have?) -> headphones/speakers You can't plug headphones directly into the phono stage (unless you are talking about a full...- Neuromance

Schiit Gungnir DAC
My unit has 3 feet (2 in the front, one in the back) that are screwed on. I haven't tried removing them, so no claims as to ease or difficulty. I didn't do a scientific evaluation, but i would agree with the timeframe in terms of ease and liquidity. Right off the bat though you already get...- Neuromance

New Computer Speakers.
I have these Swan H2s plugged into my Mac Mini to play computer sounds and Youtube/random videos. They are nice and tiny, and obviously VERY bass-limited. they are tipped up a bit toward the top end to make them sound more "clear" but work pretty well for my purposes. I guess it's been...- Neuromance

The Best audiophile tracks to test equipment
A few additions to this thread: - Stereophile Test CD 2 - really cliched I know, but it has a few really useful tracks: - A test of imaging, where someone is walking across the mikes while clapping their hands - Some warble tones done at different frequencies to taste bass...- Neuromance

Basic way to stream Spotify to my stereo?
OP: I don't know much about the WD TV Live so can't comment on that, but the Airport Express will absolutely allow you to do what you want. The AE has a built in DAC, though many, including myself, would argue it's not that great. The most cost effective way to do what you want would be to...- Neuromance

Mac OS X Music Players - alternatives to iTunes
FYI, just got an email that they released version 2.0 today. It's a tad buggy (as all x.0 software is). I use FLAC files and have the same issue as you. I might be wrong, but I assume that folks who have the separate folder for DSD just manually move those files in, and then they have...- Neuromance

Schiit Gungnir DAC
This is a tad late, but I use Mogami XLR cables with. I haven't A/Bd with other cables (given they're so affordable), but they've gotten good reviews here and on Agon. Can get them at any pro audio site (I bought from Markertek for $60 for a pair (6 ft) including shipping).- Neuromance

What DAC should I buy for a very Hi-end Hi-Fi system?
I feel like your answer or this needs to be somewhat based on what the rest of your father's stereo system looks like. Does he have tubes for amplification, high-efficiency speakers, and a turntable? Then he might like an NOS DAC. Does he prefer the sound of solid state plus Wilson-type...- Neuromance
