The KRK KNS8400 seems to be very popular here. Right now they are on amazon for $120, any good amps I could use with them for around $30-50? Or is an amp unnecessary? Also would they sound any good coming out of a smartphone?

I've changed my mind and I think I am going to upgrade my budget to about $160 or so I still want have the same criteria (good at rock, shorter cable etc, see first post). How are the m50's? Or the SRH 440's again any and all help is much appreciated.

The XZ700 were actually introduced to me in this thread. I think one of the first two or three posts. I had never heard of them either. But they look pretty cool and a lot of reviewers say the headphones sound very smooth, which interested me.

I wasn't totally opposed to using open back headphones. I just wasn't sure how loud they would be and I knew closed would be better for noise-cancelling and such. I'm hesitant to pick open back headphones because I'm not sure exactly how much sound will leak through. As I like to go to the library a lot. Are they like speakers on your head? How far away does someone have to be to hear them? Thanks for so many responses!
