The HE-400 sounds acceptable from a portable device. But of course it is better with a solid amp. I am curious how the 400i will sound with both. I guess that certainly lends credence to the i designation. If they are keeping portables in mind will the cable be shorter? Come with one for home...

I did something similar with Alpha Dog pads. Took a bit to adjust but but was feeling like the right move in no time.

Agreed. As jerg is here and may wish to comment I am interested as how the pads will change. Especially on the 400i as I have read that the jergpads are effective on the 400 but really work best with the 500.

Agreed on the wait and see approach. I like the 400s very much but it doesnt seem like I am fully satisfied with them. The 400i might fit the bill nicely at that price point but we will have to wait and see (hear).

Best I've ever had (and still do) Deltec Black Slink. A rare vintage set but nothing sounds quite like them.

Vintage tubes sound much better to me with this unit than higher end modern tubes do.
