I’m using NOS Tung-Sol. Best tube I tried for this amp, and I tried a few. Detailed, rich, balanced. Mine are microphonic though, which is annoying - don’t know if it’s common or I just got unlucky.

DACs are the most flavor-of-the-month-prone of audio equipment, mainly because very few people really understand the technology. IME some of the best DACs ever made are 90s and early 00s vintage. (My 20yo Audio Note DAC3 is one of the best DACs I’ve ever heard.) Dunc

From your description - balanced bass and forward mids - you need Eikons. Both headphones are picky about amps, so you need to factor in some amp experimentation to get the best out of them. But that said they can both sound great out of inexpensive amps. The Eikon is maybe less forgiving of...

There’s some weird/wonderful voodoo synergy going on between Mojo and T50RPs... I found it beat a lot of other, much more expensive amps driving my MrSpeakers Alpha Primes direct - it’s the best amp I’ve found for the APs! Sounds phenomenal. Dunc

They’re definitely not for everyone. I didn’t get along with them - too far from neutral for my tastes, and something about the treble was “off”. Try the Eikons. ;). (Or if you want really neutral, and have tons of cash, try the Sennheiser HD820...) Dunc

Don’t know about be Kenzie, but my Eikons sound way better on my Mogwai SE’s 300-ohm tap than the 32-ohm. More natural balance, huuuuge out-of-head soundstage - it’s all better. Dunc

Agreed, though with all options, the Mogwai SE tops out at (I think??) $2900..!! I got the SE with uprated caps but without input transformers, so slightly less eye-watering but still excellent. Dunc

Right. I think it will work, but it's not recommended.

To be clear, the Mogwai doesn't have pre-outs, only speaker outs. (I think that's what you meant, though!) One thing to consider though is that you're not supposed to have headphones and speakers connected at the same time, according to Ampsandsound. Dunc

Well-spotted - yes, that’s a new model of OCC Zach is working on. I compared it to my older (thinner gauge) ZMF OCC cable and they sounded quite different. The new one was I think better, but also had a different tonal balance - brighter, and more airy. I’ll leave it to @zach915m to chime in...

I only listened to the Auteur briefly, and it was driven by that little portable Woo thingie, which really didn't drive it well - sounded dark and woolly and bloated to me. I was laser-focused on trying amps with my Eikons, so didn't spend much time with Auteur, sorry... Dunc
