I'did not say it's easy :) Finding transformers for the right frequency/bandwidth/resistance is a science in itself and mostly its expensive, but it should be possible. :)

    That is what transformers are for :)   Simply connect the output (cable) of device A to one Side anf connect the other side of the transformer to the input of the second device. You could also use an opto-isolator (chip) or in your case an external opto-isolator.

The AKG K 1000 needs an amp, iPhone has far to less power to drive them. Imho best is a small speaker amp (2A3 or 300B) or an powerful headphone amp.  

As long as it is running,  just use it :) I personally would not invest money in it, I would try to get a used project-audio player as an entry-level device (a good old record player mostly costs more :)

most of those pcs or better motherboards have "wake up on usb", this can only work, if the port is powered :)   so not really a design flaw :P

for germany +19% VAT and + 2% foreign custom (custom depends on the type of product, imho it is 2% for head phones), so would be nearly 880 $  (673€)   for 700€, you could get them from amazon (first find in google :)     Correction: custom would only be 2% not 4%, (TARIC 8518 30 95 90)...
