I was thinking that the decoder itself amplifies the signal, and the headphone out port on the box would be a stronger source than the original feed.

What's the difference with using a headphone amp compared to say.. the headphone out on your speakers? The headphone amp would provide a cleaner amplification? I was tempted to purchase a ddts to use with my speakers, but to also double as an amp...
