    320kbps Vs. ALAC

No amount of backtracking, rationalizations and personal projection of your needs and habits onto others will now recover your lost credibility.

Line out dock vs. headphone out

Because line-out: i.) gives you a signal (more or less) untouched by the device's internal amp and volume control mechanism; ii.) has an output impedance well matched to the input impedance of line-in on devices that accept line-level inputs; iii.) provides a standard peak voltage of no...

    320kbps Vs. ALAC

Please, someone take this clown out of his misery and explain to him the advantages of RAW.

    FLAC on IPOD

Quote:   Same here.  Apple iPod Classic Classic 160GB with nothing but ALAC.  Great battery life and never any skipping or stuttering on music playback.  And no, JPEG is still not the equal of RAW or TIFF.

Line out dock vs. headphone out

The benefits of line-out over head-phone out usually boil down to i.) better impedance matching and ii.) better amplification by an outboard amplifier as opposed to the stock intergrated circuit chip amp in the device.  It has nothing to do with "double-amping".

Which part is illegal?  Ripping them or selling them?

    320kbps Vs. ALAC

Rather than concentrating on semantics, you should focus on the core of the rebuttal to your pseudo-argument.  Photojournalists and all other photographers who need to submit their shots immediately shoot JPEG out of necessity, not because JPEG is good enough.  It ain't.

    320kbps Vs. ALAC

The reason why photojournalists, including sports photographers, is that i.) they need to get the shots to the editor asap so they have no time for RAW conversion, and ii.) because the resolution of a good JPEG far exceed the resolution of newspaper photographs.  The  Ken Rockwell and sports...

    O2 vs TOTL

Quote:   Yet another of the absurd straw-men that are attributed to the so-called "objectivists".  You should see it as a not very cleverly articulated and veiled and ultimately failed way of undermining the "objectivists" claims.  You will recall that Guttenberg is one and the same with...

Active Speakers/Monitors: Dispelling the ignorance, confusion and myths

The term "nearfield" has a technical definition of sorts.  It is the distance from the speaker/monitor beyond which reflections exceed the direct sound from the speaker/monitor.  As you can see from the definition, the radius of the "nearfield" is largely a function of the listening room.  Keep...

    Atom Netbook as music jukebox

Thinking of buying one of those $300 Atom processor netbooks to hold and stream FLAC from MusicBee out to a DAC.  Do they have enough processing power?  Any other concerns?

    Schiit Bifrost or DACMagic Plus?

Sorry, my bad.  I confused the headphone out with the line out.  Of course, the ODAC, most DACs will have a line out.

Ken Ishiwata on CMOS and the modern PCB

Quote:   Not so relevant for well designed and engineered modern amps, no.  Still very relevant for loudspeaker design and loudspeaker fidelity.  While we are on the subject, one of the drawbacks of passive crossovers is the group delay and phase differences that they introduce to the signal.

Ken Ishiwata on CMOS and the modern PCB

Quote:   This is a well-known phenomenon.  It is often called group delay and a related phenomenon is the the concept of phase difference.

    Schiit Bifrost or DACMagic Plus?

Quote:   You can always buy RCA to XLR cables.  Keep in mind that the DACMagic Plus has variable line output (to control volume) while the Bitfrost does not.

Ken Ishiwata on CMOS and the modern PCB

I was talking about amplifiers, components that may be required to put out large currents.  High current is not really a requirement for pre-amplification, line-level microelectronics.

Alternatives to DacMagic Plus to drive headphones and monitors

The DACMagic Plus is a terrific value, and it can drive monitors without a problem from either its balanced or unbalanced line outputs.  The main problem with its headphone amp is its high output impedance.

No, really.  How much is your budget?   If money is no object, I'd get a pair of PMC AML1 for $10,000/pair.
