The Koss do need amping and the Fiio E6 and E11 work beautifully with them.

My quest for the perfect headphone has led me to Senn HD598, ATH m50, Sony zx700 and all of them are decent phones but it took a $79 headphone for me to find an engaging sound.   The Koss DJ100 headphones have great imaging and detail. Excellent sound clarity and handles most music genres...

J&R Music is selling the KRK KNS6400 for $79 with free shipping through Amazon. Weirdly, it is not listed on their own web site. I have been hearing (sic) good things about KNS 6400. Reviews have been positive on this relatively unknown phones.
