It's encouraging to hear the three new reports (Gwarmi, VandyMan and rav3n, if I'm counting right) of RS220 positives without negatives.  I'd definitely like to have a set of these at some point down the road.  (I returned the RS180s, by the way -- I began to find the treble a bit too pronounced).

One possibility: buy a Fostex T50RP (approx $80) so you can use its drivers, and use this as a basis to create your own headphones, using the many T50RP modding discussions for guidance (e.g., see http://www.head-fi.org/t/452404/just-listened-to-some-fostex-t50rps-today-wow).

To my ears, the RS180 is considerably brighter and less mellow than the RS 220, although I wouldn't say sibilant.   It's too bad there are so few places to audition this stuff!    

I haven't seen much discussion of the sound quality from this batch of TPs.  Are any of the people who've received theirs ready to give listening impressions yet..?

Hmm, now I wish I had tried the DT880 600 ohm instead of the 250 ohm.  That's an impressive description of the 600ohm version!

I have experience with the HE-500 and the DT 880 250 ohm (not the 600 ohm), having owned both, although not at the same time.  I preferred the HE-500 by a huge margin.  For me, the DT 880's treble was overwhelming, and the bass underwhelming.  Hopefully this is one useful data point, even though...

I did try using fresh standard AAA batteries, and that didn't help with my issue (the hum/whine).  Micro-drops were not frequent for me with either type of battery.

I agree that the RS180 represents the range well (as does the humble RS120, in my opinion).  I think, though, that many HeadFiers would consider both (especially the RS120) to be on the bright side, and would say that the HD 600/650 (and consequently the RS 220) are more balanced.  I suppose...
