Sounds like you got the old version PX100's. You should try the new version, not dark at all and sounds very good. Only costs about $35 bucks.

So you got a stock 1.1 w/AKM4393+JRC5532? I dont recall anyone else have heard impressions for this version. I got a modded 1.3 which comes with AD1852 +2604 and sounds very good. If your listening with the stock headphone amp, don't bother it's not good.

What configuration in your Zhaolu did you get? Have you tried using 3X 2604's? Its good if you like bass.

Whats your setup you using with the AKG's? What kind of music? Sounds like your ears are currently more used to your other phones.

Hmm.. Could be problem with their demo CD is crappy. Try using your own favorite cds to test. Also the headphone out of the MCD201 may not be good to drive the HD595 either. Try the phones with another gear would be good too.

Considering how this time the dac 2.0 can be modded/tweaked a whole lot more, its hard to say which is best. First choice I would say is what dac board. The basic tweak is rolling opamps in the DAC side. Then the stock head amps opamps can also be rolled. The next level gets more complicated...

On Tangents website he mentions the TL082 is a jellybean (cheap) opamp. It looks like its safe to roll better opamps.
